Versailles postmaster retires

Jackie Hill retired from the US Postal Service after 27 years of service, the most recent as postmaster at Versailles. She began her career as a clerk in the Vevay Post Office where she worked until being promoted to Postmaster of Glencoe, KY, in 1990.

Hill has served as Postmaster of Dillsboro, Carrollton, KY, Cynthiana, KY, and Florence, IN, in addition to supervisory positions in Florence and Covington KY.

Hill says many changes have taken place during her 27 years, most changes having to do with computer technology. One item of interest is that when she began her career, the USPS delivered to approximately 90 million addresses. Today, they deliver to more than 151 million addresses, which definitely has an impact on the cost of postage stamps, according to Hill.

One of the more positive changes she has seen in her career has been the introduction of the self-adhesive stamps.

Jackie and her husband Bill, also a recent USPS retiree, look forward to traveling, spending more time with grandchildren, and other community involvement.

Fatal crash under investigation

There are still unanswered questions about a fatality that occurred in the early morning hours of August 16 where a woman from Sunman was killed.

Sometime after the incident occurred, police from the sheriff’s office released information that Christina Foster, 38, Sunman, was in the roadway when Scottie Taulbee, 54, Dillsboro, struck her. He was driving a 1993 Toyota passenger car when he struck Foster, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said a call came in about 4:31 a.m. last Thursday to Ripley County Communications that a pedestrian had been struck in the roadway on SR 129 just south of the SR 48 intersection.

Those traveling in that direction for work that morning were re-routed due to the accident that caused the road to be closed between SR 350 and SR 48 for about three hours while investigators worked the scene.

The driver has not been cited, according to Sheriff Tom Grills.

Deputy Kendall Hankins is the investigating officer and was assisted by the sheriff, Delaware Fire Department, Ripley County Medics, Rescue 10, Ripley County Coroner, Batesville Police, and the Indiana State Police.

Police say it is unclear why Foster was in the middle of the road at that time of the morning. She is survived by her husband Jeff of Batesville, two sons and four step-children.

Foster was an employee of Subway at Greensburg for the past year and a member of the American Legion in Osgood.

Funeral services have been set for Wednesday, August 22 at 11:00 a.m. at the Glenn E. George & Son Funeral Home with burial in the Springdale Cemetery in Shelbyville.
