Holton man found guilty on heroin charges
A After a two-day jury trial, a Ripley County Superior Court jury returned three guilty verdicts on Lucas S. Vaughn, 21, of Holton.
Vaughn had been charged with Possession of Heroin, Class D Felony; Possession of a Hypodermic Needle Used for Injecting Heroin, Class D Felony and Possession of Marijuana, Class A Misdemeanor.
The jury heard evidence that Vaughn and a friend possessed and used heroin in a remote location outside of Holton.
Two syringes containing heroin were found in Vaughn's car, along with other items associated with heroin use. Vaughn told the jury that the syringes belonged to the passenger and that he did not know about the syringes or the heroin. The defendant told the jury that his passenger threw a heroin syringe on his lap as law enforcement was approaching his car. The jury did not believe Vaughn's story and convicted him on all counts.
Chief Deputy Prosecutor Ryan King presented the State's case. King was assisted by Deputy Prosecutor Kate Bumgarner.
Vaughn was represented by Attorney Bill Dillon of Dove and Dillon, North Vernon.
After the jury returned the guilty verdicts, Judge James B. Morris remanded Vaughn to the custody of the Ripley County Jail.
Sentencing has been scheduled for February 1. |
