Lady Eagles win season opener against the Rising Sun Lady Shiners
Gary Franklin, Sports Editor
On Thursday, November 10, the Jac-Cen-Del Lady
Eagle varsity basketball team delivered the task at hand against
their first regular season opponent, the Rising Sun Lady Shiners,
at RSHS
Though the final score of game was JCD 47-41 RS, it failed to
paint the true picture of the contest. Once the Lady Eagles
grasped their second lead after ties at 2 and 6, the Lady Eagles
took the lead and never looked back.
Quarter One
The Lady Shiners opened the scoring with a senior Katie Duncan
FG. Lady Eagle senior Emily Huntington quickly knotted the game
at two with her first score of the new basketball season. Senior
Lady Eagle teammate Meagan Hughes put JCD up at 4-2 with her
first basket. Huntington nailed her second FG to extend the
Lady Eagle lead to four at 6-2.
Lady Shiner sophomore Sydney Elliot sank a FG for a score of
4-6. Shortly after entering the game, a turnover and a foul
whistled against Lady Eagle senior Megan Obermeyer sent Lady
Shiner sophomore Sydney Elliot to the charity stripe where she
nailed a pair free throws and tied the game at 6.
Lady Shiner junior Kennedy Oser put RS back in front 8-6 with
her first FG of the 2011 season. However, a three shot foul
whistled against RS, with the first quarter expiring that sent
Lady Eagle senior Morgan Young to the charity stripe where she
buried her three free throw shots.
As the first quarter expired, JCD held on to a one point edge
at 9-8.
Quarter Two
With the onset of quarter two, Lady Eagle senior Meagan Hughes
drained her first three-point shot attempt to stretch JCD's
lead again to four at 12-8. Lady Shiner senior Megan Pickett
scored a FG for 10-12.
The Lady Eagle answer came at the hand of senior Kelsey Pilz
with her first FG. Trailing 10-14, RS junior, Oser failed to
connect on a pair of FT opportunities.
A fast break by Hughes with her pass ahead to Huntington resulted
in another JCD FG. Hughes followed with a pair of FT shots for
an eight point, 18-10 score. Huntington drilled a three-pointer
from downtown, resulting in an 11 point edge at 21-10 for the
Lady Eagles near the half way mark of quarter two.
Following a RS time out at 4:21, Lady Eagle senior Amber Crank
netted one of two FT attempts before Lady Shiner junior Brittany
Camden scored her first FG. Camden then scored one of two FT
attempts, leading to a JCD time out at 2:46.
Senior Lady Eagle Huntington responded by hitting one of her
two FT attempts, then scored a FG . A miss on a pair of FT shots
by Lady Shiner Oser led to another Lady Eagle Pilz FG to give
JCD the obvious controlling edge at 27-13.
Lady Shiner sophomore Sydney Willhite missed a pair of FT attempts
only to have Lady Eagle senior Megan Obermeyer sink both of
her shots. Lady Shiner Camden added a FG followed by a teammate
Oser FG as time ran short. However before time elapsed, Lady
Eagle Hughes sank one of her two FT attempts, giving JCD the
13 point, 30-17 lead at halftime.
Quarter Three
A shaky start for the Lady Eagles in the third quarter led Coach
Smith to call a time out. Lady Shiner Camden scored a FG only
to have Lady Eagle Huntington answer with another three-pointer.
Back to back fouls whistled on Lady Eagle Crank sent Lady Shiner
Oser to the charity stripe where she came up short on the pair.
Four foul calls later, Lady Eagle Hughes drilled a three-pointer
to put JCD up 36-19.
The Lady Shiner answer was a pair of FT's by Pickett, followed
by a pair of FT makes by sophomore teammate Samie Lozier. Over
the last three minutes of third quarter action, Lady Eagle Young
scored one of two FT attempts and senior teammate Kara Wagner
put in her first FG. Wagner's miss on the front end of a one
plus one led to Lady Shiner senior Kendra Hudsons first FG,
ending the period JCD 40-25 RS.
Fourth Quarter
Back to back FG's by Lady Shiner Oser led to a JCD called time
out just under a minute into the fourth period action. A fourth
foul whistled against Lady Eagle Crank sent Lady Shiner Oser
to the charity stripe where she missed both shots.
Lady Eagles Pilz and Huntington each connected on a pair FT
attempts, running their lead back to 15 points at 44-29. A fourth
foul called on Lady Eagle Pilz sent Lady Shiner junior Ali Bostic
to the FT line where she missed the front end of the one plus
one.
A first foul assessed to Lady Eagle Hughes sent Lady Shiner
Oser to the charity stripe where she made the first of two,
followed by a FG by sophomore teammate Sydney Elliot. Lady Shiner
Camden added one of two FT's, followed by a one of two connections
by teammate Pickett.
Lady Eagle Pilz missed a pair of FT shots but teammate Hughes
connected on one of her two shots allowing JCD to retain a double
digit lead at 11, 45-34 near the four minute mark.
An assessed fifth foul on Lady Eagle Crank sent Lady Shiner
Duncan to the charity stripe for an attempted three point play,
but Duncan failed to make the FT shot.
A JCD time out was called at 2:19, followed by a RS time out
at 1:56. With under a minute remaining in the game, Lady Shiner
Pickett connected for the old fashioned three point play with
her FG and FT made on a fifth foul assessed to Lady Eagle Pilz.
A foul on Lady Shiner Armstrong sent Lady Eagle Huntington to
the foul lane where she made one of two. A Lady Shiner Bostic
foul sent Lady Eagle Young to the charity stripe, but she missed
both shots. Lady Shiner Pickett put in a desperation FG for
a score of 46-41. The Lady Shiners called time out with 3.2
seconds remaining on the game clock. On returning to action,
at the .9 second mark, a Lady Shiner Willhite assessed foul
sent Lady Eagle Hughes to the charity stripe for two of which
she made one, resulting in the final score of JCD 47-41 RS.
