The closure of State Road 62 at the east entrance to Friendship has caused quite a stir in the community. It is a hassle for motorists coming into the small town from Dearborn County, and those needing to exit that way.
However, the Indiana Department of Transportation remains firm that repairing the sliding hillside and the road is imperative for the safety of motorists.

According to Greg Prince of INDOT, safety is the number one priority. He said he realizes the inconvenience and although the “ball is rolling” it takes time.

Prince told The Versailles Republican that the Geo-tech and pavement evaluation reports have been received for this project at the Seymour District of INDOT. He noted they are in the process of working on the required environmental document, cross sections, and plans in order to be submitted for an expedited contract.

Estimated cost of the project is $1.7 million dollars. Prince said the project will be federally funded through approved Emergency Relief Funds. He said no letting date has been set at this time, therefore there is no date stating when the repairs will actually begin. Right now the project is moving, just not where it can be seen.
In a media advisory from Prince, he noted, “The safety of the motoring public is INDOT’s main concern. Therefore, S.R. 62 in Ripley County will remain closed.

Recently residents of Friendship gathered to hear about the project from Kathy Eaton McKalip, INDOT representative, where questions were answered with the project overview given.
