regular season soccer action winds down
Gary Franklin, Sports Editor
JCD @ South Ripley
Fitting for the conclusion of the South Ripley Raider boys and
the Jac-Cen-Del Eagle co-ed soccer teams' regular season action
ended in a battle between them. The neighboring rivals faced
off for the last game battle at South Ripley High School on
Friday evening, September 30. After a season of extreme heat
to deal with, the two teams battled in stout winds and very
cool temperatures.
The Eagles managed to gain the one point edge during the first
half of play, however, the Raiders rallied to knot the score
before the first half whistle sounded. Neither team was able
to add points through the second half play, leading to a shoot-out.
At stake for the Eagles was an opportunity to win the ORVC conference
outright with a win over SR and a Rising Sun victory over the
Southwestern Hanover Rebels. If both JCD and SwH won or lost
in their Friday night games, a tie for the conference title
would remain in place. However, South Ripley could move JCD
from the top spot contention with a Raider victory leaving SwH
the champ, should they win over Rising Sun. Much at stake with
this game, especially with the rivalry, another factor as well
was possession of the Traveling Matt Obendorf Memorial
Trophy that JCD had won from SR in their earlier game
this season.
Fate sealed the deal for JCD as the Raiders captured the MO
trophy and avenged their earlier loss to the Eagles.
Leading to the JCD SR final regular season contest for JCD were
games and results including the following:
JCD vs Sw Hanover
Thursday, September 29, vs Southwestern Hanover Rebels at JCDHS.
The Rebels were visiting JCD with only two conference losses
on their record, while JCD had one. Big game, big consequences
were based on the game's outcome.
JCD vs Shawe
Monday, September 26, The Eagles hosted the Shawe Memorial Hilltoppers
on JCDs senior night. A 4-0 victory set the tone for an
enjoyable evening for the celebrating home team. A goal by Eagle
Jared Dickman during the first half action was the only score.
Dickman added a second goal for the Eagles during the second
half along with additional Eagle scoring from Alex Brison with
an assist and freshman teammate Blake Straub with his first
ever varsity goal scored.
Tyler Straub had an assist as did senior Codie Horan and Derek
Powers. JCD senior Dustin Wagner went the entire game as goalie
for the Eagles, earning another shutout.
Senior players honored included: Amber Crank, AJ Ertel, Codie
Horan, Duncan Wolff and Dustin Wagner. Coach Mark Jones noted,
all five seniors started, played significant minutes and contributed
to the team victory.
The Eagles for the season were 11-3 overall and 9-1 in conference
action at conclusion of the Shawe game.
JCD @ Waldron
On Friday evening, the Eagles traveled to Waldron to battle
the Mohawks. The Eagle varsity won 3-1. Waldron scored the first
goal of the game, Eagle Derek Douglas countered to knot the
game at one. During second half action, Eagle Alex Brison added
two goals for JCD with an assist to Douglas for the 3-1 varsity
victory.
JCD @ So. Dearborn
Coach Mark Jones and his JCD Eagles traveled to Aurora to face
the SD Knights in varsity soccer action on Wednesday evening,
September 21. Varsity action found the Eagles unable to score
while SD netted two goals. SD scored their first goal approximately
five minutes into first half play and added their second with
about 15 to go in the game. Following the game's conclusion
Coach Jones stated, I was pleased with how we played the
game, I believe the game will help us improve. The Eagle
JV also fell 0-1 to SD in their one half of game competition.
JCD vs Rising Sun
On Monday, September 20, the Jac-Cen-Del Eagles played host
to the visiting Rising Sun Shiners. This game was a let down
for Coach Jones and his Eagles, falling 0-3 to RS. Coach Jones
stated, THEIR WERE NO HIGHLIGHTS FOR US in the varsity
game. We failed to score despite having more shots and more
shots on goal. Rising Sun just beat us, NO EXCUSES.
The JV period ended in a 1-1 tie. In JV action, Codie Horan
scored for the Eagles within the first two minutes. Unfortunately,
one of the Eagle defenders kicked the ball into the Eagle goal
to tie the score where it remained, 1-1.
JCD @ Milan
The Eagle varsity traveled to Milan to battle the Indians on
Wednesday, September 14, from which they escaped with a 2-1
win at game's conclusion, decided by a shoot-out. Neither team
managed to score in the first half. Eagle Alex Brison netted
a goal in the second half action, later tied by the Indians
off an Alex Walter goal.
During regulation play, Dustin Wagner played goalie for JCD
with Logan Karstetter defending in goal for the tribe. Indian
coach Kevin Walter put his senior son Nick in to defend goal
in the shoot-out, while Eagle coach Mark Jones stayed with his
regular goalie, senior Dustin Wagner.
A narrow escape for JCD left coach Jones disappointed with his
teams performance. Yes it is nice to win, but at this
point in the season when we should be showing improvement, we
took a step back. On the other side of the coin, the Indians
stepped up their game, only to disappointedly fall just short
of another victory that was within reach for them on this particular
night.
So. Ripley Raider games and player stats
