JCD
Eagles open 2011
soccer season with 2-0
win over visiting Milan
Indians
Gary Franklin, Sports Writer
On Tuesday evening, August 16, with only a couple weeks
to prepare for the season (not knowing if they were going
to be allowed to have a team or not) the Milan Indians, behind
coach Kevin Walter, fared pretty well in their first contest
of the 2011 season against the Jac-Cen-Del Eagles coached
by Mark Jones.
The final score found JCD the victor, 2-0, with junior Alex
Brison the benefactor of delivering both goals for the Eagles.
Brison scored his first goal on a corner kick, expertly delivered
to enter the net directly behind Indian goalie Logan Karsteter
with 4:49 remaining in the first 40 minutes action.
The second and only other goal scored during the remainder
of the game came at 15:28 in the second half with Brison delivering
a bell ringer into the center of the net just over the outstretched
arms of Indian goalie Karsteter.
At game's end, both coaches found satisfaction in their team's
efforts with room for improvement as the season unfolds. Indian
senior and team leader Nick Walter lost some valuable playing
time in the second half of action with leg cramping. His advice
to all players at the end of the game was to "get a drink
at every break during the school day to stay hydrated",
as his cramps were likely due to dehydration.
Game time temperatures varied from high 70's to mid 80's with
slight cloud cover ocassionally and a hit/miss breeze. Unlike
many days this summer, it was a beautiful day for soccer.
The Eagles now become the ORVC target as a first place contender
at 1-0 on the season. They will face Franklin County on Thursday,
August 18, at JCDHS, with a 5 p.m. varsity game start.
The Milan Indians will next face battle at Seton Catholic
High School with a 5 p.m. start on Monday, August 22.
