John Leslie Walsh
John Leslie Walsh, 89, of Holton, passed away Saturday, February 19, 2011 at the King’s Daughters’ Hospital in Madison. He was born near Pierceville on May 4, 1921, the son of John and Alice Stegner Walsh. He was married to Ruth Brower on June 12, 1939 and his wife of 71 years survives.
Other survivors include three sons Lloyd (Bernice) Walsh of Versailles, Alan (Arlene) Walsh of Nashville, and David (Janie) Walsh of Palm Bay, Florida; nine grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren, and 11 great-great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, his son Gary, brothers Norman and Walter Walsh, and his sisters Beulah Laswell and Lucille Downey.
Mr. Walsh was a member of the Versailles Baptist Church where he served as a deacon and a trustee. He was also a member of the Ripley County Farm Bureau and the Versailles American Legion. Mr. Walsh was a farmer, a former employee of the Halcomb Home Center in Versailles, and drove a school bus for the Versailles schools for 20 years.
John was an Army veteran of WWII where he served with the 740th Railway Operation Btn. He served in Northern France, Rhineland Central Europe, and the Ardennes receiving the American Theatre Ribbon, Good Conduct Ribbon, Victory Medal, and the EAME Ribbon with four bronze stars.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, February 23 at 11 a.m. at the Versailles Baptist Church with John’s granddaughter Rev. Lesley Krieger and Rev. Mike Cantrell officiating. Burial will be in the Holton Cemetery with military graveside rites by the Versailles American Legion. Visitation is being held today, Tuesday from 5-8 p.m. at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles and from 10 a.m. until time of services Wednesday at the church.
Memorials may be given to the Versailles Baptist Church building fund or the Holton Cemetery in care of the funeral home.

Robert Lee "Pee Wee" Tinker
Robert Lee "Pee Wee" Tinker, 62, of Pleasant, passed away Tuesday, February 15, 2011. Funeral services were held Saturday, February 19, at Haskell & Morrison Funeral Home, Vevay. John D. Aldridge, 70, of Lexington, passed away Wednesday, February 16, 2011. Harold Robert Vankirk
Harold Robert Vankirk age 75, of Sunman, passed away Wednesday, February 16, 2011 at Ripley Crossing in Milan. He was born July 26, 1935, the son of Cloyde Raymond and Edna Eaton Vankirk. He had married Juanita Higham who preceded him in death, then later he married Mary Fair who also preceded him in death.
Survivors include daughter, Monica (Gregg) Ogden of Osgood; stepson, David "Bluegill" (Debbie) Higham of Batesville; stepdaughters, Pat (Gary) LaVell of Rising Sun, Sandy (Norman) Bruce of Aurora, and Janice (Harley) Uhlmansiek of Aurora; brothers, Garold "Mouse' Vankirk of Napoleon, and Raymond Vankirk of Morris; one grandchild; nine step grandchildren; two great grandchildren; five step great grandchildren; and one step great great grandchildren.
Mr. Vankirk was an Army Veteran, and a past member of the Napoleon Fire Department and the Sunman American Legion. In 1965 he owned & operated Vankirk's Standard Station in Napoleon. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Greensburg. Harold retired after working 20 years for Indiana Grain in Cincinnati, Ohio. He also owned & operated "Bluegill's Bait Shop " in Sunman.
Funeral services were held Saturday, February 19, at Neal's Funeral Home, Osgood with burial in the River View Cemetery, Aurora. Military graveside services were provided by the Osgood American Legion and the Napoleon VFW. Memorials may be given to the Napoleon Fire Department. Thomas Michael Peter
Thomas Michael Peter, 53, passed away Friday, February 18, 2011.
Survivors include son, Tommy Peter; mother, Mary Rose Peter; brothers, James A. (Becky) Peter, and Jeffrey (Debbie) Peter; sisters, Suzanne (Chris) Clingman, Karen (Greg) Mondro, Beverly (Charles) Simpson and Gayle (Tim) Bischel; 25 nieces and nephews; and other family and friends. He was preceded in death by father, James P. Peter, and niece, Monica.
Visitation will be held Wednesday, from 4-8 p.m. at Minges Funeral Home in Harrison with rosary services at 7 p.m. Latin Requiem Mass will be held on Thursday, at Saints Philomena & Cecilia Catholic Church, Brookville, at 11:30 a.m. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Joe Day
Joe W. Day, 73 of Versailles passed away Sunday, February 13, 2011 at his home.
Mr. Day was known to many in the area and across the nation as the man who created a huge Christmas display at his home each year. People came from every state and abroad to see the spectacular display.
He was a 1955 graduate of New Marion High School and had received an associates degree in electrical work. He was an electrician and a member of IBEW Local 639 and had also worked as a carpenter and plumber.
Mr. Day was a member of the Church of Christ at Milan where his funeral will be held on Thursday, February 17 at 10:30 a.m. with Shawn McMullen and Dale Day officiating. Burial will be in the Grandview Memorial Gardens at Madison.
Visitation will be Wednesday, February 16 from 4-8 p.m. at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home, Versailles, and from 9:30 a.m. until time of services on Thursday at the church.
Mr. Day was born at Barwick in Breathitt County, Kentucky, on October 12, 1937, the son of Kelly and Erasta Stidham Day.
He was married to Peggy Sackett on July 12, 1996 and she survives.
Other survivors include two sons: Darrell Day of Indianapolis and Dennis (Stefanie) Day of Lebanon; one daughter, Sandy (Gale) Howard of Versailles; four stepchildren: Douglas (Myra) Walston and Bethany (Terry) Chapman both of Rising Sun; Rebecca (Tim) Couch of Austin and David Walston of Versailles; 21 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren; four sisters: Lillie Mae Hisle of Greenfield, Pruda Setser, Mary Ellen Thieman, and Pauline (Irvin) Hart all of Versailles; sister-in-law Tish Day of Versailles; two brothers, Dale (LaVerne) Day and Tom (Lorine) Day both of Versailles
He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Harlan Day.

Roger L. Finney

Roger L. Finney, 71, of Holton, passed away Saturday, February 12, 2011, at Dearborn County Hospital in Lawrenceburg. He was born in Covington, Kentucky on June 28, 1939, the son of Thomas R. Finney and Dorothy Quick Finney. He married Cathy Kuhlmeier on March 26, 1983, and she survives.
Other survivors include one daughter, Ellen Finney (David) Pickett of Pendleton; and two sons, John (Teresa) of Indianapolis, and Tom (Mary) of Holton; four grandchildren, Samuel Carson and Joseph Roger Pickett of Pendleton, and John Brommett and Mattie Ann Finney of Indianapolis. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Benjamin and Charles Finney.
Mr. Finney was a 1957 graduate of Simon Kenton High School in Independence, Kentucky, and he attended the American Institute of Banking in Cincinnati, Ohio. He served in the United States Army Reserves from 1961-1967, honorably discharged as a Specialist E5. He began his career at Provident Bank in Cincinnati, where he was the Director of Purchasing before taking a position in 1969 at Peoples National Bank in Lawrenceburg. Mr. Finney retired from banking in 1993 as the Senior Vice President, Branch Administrator, and member of the Board of Directors. From 1994-2003, Mr. Finney operated his own financial planning office in Aurora, providing services as a registered investment advisor.
Mr. Finney was a charter member of the Dearborn County Chamber of Commerce, a Kentucky Colonel, former member of the South Ripley School Board, and served previously in the Versailles Lion’s Club for many years. He was a lifelong member of Banklick Christian Church in Independence, Kentucky, and he attended Tanglewood Baptist Church for over 40 years. He served as Deacon, Choir Director, Superintendent, and Sunday School teacher. In his retirement, Mr. Finney enjoyed spending time on his farm with his family.
Visitation is being held today, Tuesday, from 4-8 p.m. at the Stratton Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, at the funeral home, with Reverend Russell Stevens officiating. Burial will be in the Cliff Hill Cemetery in Versailles. Memorials may be given to the Tanglewood Baptist Church in Versailles or The Hanson Center in Batesville.

Lendall B. Terry
Lendall B. Terry, 86, of Osgood, passed away Sunday, February 13, 2011 at the Cincinnati, VA Medical Center. He was born August 14, 1924, in Osgood, the son of Roy S. and Emma Jolly Terry.
Mr. Terry was a WWII Army Veteran. He was also a past member of the Osgood American Legion. He graduated from Indiana University in the school of law. From 1953-1972, Mr. Terry worked for the Internal Revenue Service. He served as the Ripley County Judge from 1973-1978.
Survivors include daughter, Linda (John) Wagner of Osgood; four grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
Memorials may be given to the Jac-Cen-Del Scholarship Foundation in care of Neal’s Funeral Home. There will be private family services. Arrangements handled by Neal’s Funeral Home, Osgood.

Estal Charles Craig, 89, of Aurora, passed away Thursday, February 10, 2011. William "Bill" McCauley
William "Bill" McCauley, 73, of Cross Plains passed away Sunday, February 6, 2011 at the Drake Hospital in Cincinnati. He was born on Bear Creek near Cross Plains on November 26, 1937, the son of Albert and Twila McMackin McCauley. He was married to Waunetta Fay Herndon on January 25, 1958 and she preceded him in death on May 31, 2010.
Survivors include one son Michael (Stacy) McCauley of Greensburg; three daughters Theresa (Ken) Wagner of West Harrison, Tammy (Brian) Varble of Versailles, KY, and Michelle (Jeff) Gammons of Milan; nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild; one sister Anita (David) Chandler of Cross Plains. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sisters Loa Marie Fischer and Delores Meyer.
Mr. McCauley was a 1955 graduate of Cross Plains High School. He was a truck driver for Hunger Trucking at Benham and retired as a driver for Aurora Casket after 20 years.
Funeral services will be held Friday, February 11 at 2 p.m. at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles with Bro. Brian Varble officiating. Burial will be in the Methodist Cemetery at Cross Plains. Visitation will also be Friday from 12 p.m. until time of services at the funeral home. Memorials may be given to the donors choice in care of the funeral home.

Berton A. Naylor
Berton A. Naylor, 77, of Holton passed away Thursday, February 3, 2011 at the Decatur Memorial Hospital in Greensburg. He was born at Milan on February 21, 1933, the son of Howard and Alice Brown Naylor. He was married to Elizabeth Harshman on June 8, 1957 and she survives.
Other survivors include one son David (Christy Donoghue) Naylor of Westport; one daughter Lisa Naylor of Versailles; six grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother William.
Mr. Naylor was a 1951 graduate of Versailles High School. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War. Cpl. Naylor served with the 619th Engineer Company and received the National Defense Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. He was a former employee of Thatcher Glass in Lawrenceburg and had been finance officer for Croxton Motors in Madison and Ande Chevrolet in Lawrenceburg.
Bert was a member of the Versailles American Legion and the NRA.
Funeral services were held Monday, February 7, at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles with Rev. Leon Turner officiating. Burial was in the Holton Cemetery with military graveside rites by the Versailles American Legion. Memorials may be given to the American Cancer Society or the Holton Cemetery in care of the funeral home.

John Lester Graver
John Lester Graver, 70, of Milan, passed away Sunday, February 6, 2011, at his home. He was born March 31, 1940 in Dillsboro, the son of Leroy Edward and Deloris Greive Graver. He married Wanda Lynne Schulenburg on November 3, 1962, and she survives.
Other survivors include daughters, Amy Lynne Graver of Milan, and Lisa Jo (Jeffrey) Kolb DDS of Boonville; brother, Paul Graver of Harrison, OH; sisters, Ruth Johnson of Lexington, KY, and Lois Lade of Cincinnati, OH; two grandchildren, Evan Kolb and Elise Meyer; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, and one son, Robert John Graver, and one brother, David Graver.
Mr. Graver had been an employee of the William Powell Valve Co., in Cincinnati, and later worked for the Indiana Dept. of Transportation retiring in 2009 from the Aurora Highway Garage substation. John was a member of the St. John’s Lutheran Church at Farmers Retreat.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, February 9, at 11 a.m. at St. John’s Lutheran Church at Farmers Retreat with Rev. Richard L. Wilkie and Rev. Richard Kolaskey officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. today, Tuesday, at Laws-Carr-Moore Funeral Home, Milan, and one hour prior to services on Wednesday, at the church. Memorials may be given to the St. Jude’s Children's Hospital, St. John’s Lutheran Cemetery Fund or Trinity Lutheran Church stained glass window fund, or any humane society. Vivian E. Matz

Vivian E. Matz, 93, of Napoleon passed away Saturday, February 5, 2011 at the Indiana Heart Hospital in Indianapolis. She was born near Napoleon on September 2, 1917, the daughter of Louis and Ella Harlemert Bultman. She was married to William Matz on January 27, 1940 and he preceded her in death on October 26, 1987.
Survivors include one daughter Cathy (Terry) Caplinger of Indianapolis; one grandson Michael Caplinger and his fiancé Jenny McQueen of Greenwood; one brother Clyde (Angie) Bultman of Joshua Tree, California.
Mrs. Matz was a lifelong resident of the Napoleon community and was a member of St. Peter’s United Church of Christ at Fink’s Corner where she participated in the Ladies Aid Society. Vivian assisted her husband on the farm and was a homemaker.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, February 9 at 11 a.m. at St. Peter’s United Church of Christ at Fink’s Corner with Rev. Karyl Leslie officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation is being held today, Tuesday from 5-7 p.m. at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles and from 10 a.m. until time of services Wednesday at the church. Lois M. Roth
Lois M. Roth, 86, of Butlerville passed away Thursday, February 3, 2011 at her home. She was born at Commiskey on April 8, 1924, the daughter of Valentine and Myrtle Donnell Trapp. She was married to Allen Roth on March 13, 1941 and he preceded her in death on July 12, 1994.
Survivors include two sons Curtis (Joyce) Roth and Frank (Mary Etta) Roth both of Butlerville; four daughters Betty (Roy) Gunter of New Marion, Shirley Borders of Benham, Judy (Tim) Tyler and Donna Shryer both of Holton; 15 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren, and four great-great grandchildren; one brother Curtis (Sadie) Trapp of Austin. She was preceded in death by her sisters Lena Dunbar and Anna Simmons, and her granddaughter Natalie Tyler.
Mrs. Roth retired from Muscatatuck in 1986 where she worked for 30 years as an attendant. She was a member of the Versailles Church of Christ.
Funeral services were held Monday, February 7, at the Versailles Church of Christ with Bro. Dale Day officiating. Burial was in the Otter Creek Cemetery at Nebraska. Memorials may be given to the Versailles Church of Christ in care of the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles.

Floyd (Jay) Lewis, Jr.
Floyd (Jay) Lewis, Jr., 82, of Milan, passed away at his home. He was born January 27, 1929, in Morgan County, KY, the son of Floyd and Opal (Dose) Lewis.
Survivors include sons, Bryant (Hollee) Lewis of St. Paul, MN, Craig (Katie) Lewis of Moores Hill; daughters, Alicia DeBoor of Lexington, KY, and Dianna (Travis) Gilbert of Garland, TX; brother, David (Janet) Lewis of Milan; sisters, Wilma (Jack) Wessling of Alexandria, KY, and Delma (Guy) Langenbrunner of Cincinnati, OH; grandchildren, Olivia, Maria, Alexis, Ashley, and Alaina Lewis, Lauren, Julia, and Katherine DeBoor, and Luke, Noah, and Ethan Gilbert.
Mr. Lewis was a former employee of MacGregor in Cincinnati, and later a maintenance man at Sunman Dearborn Elementary School at Sunman. He was a veteran having served his country in the Coast Guard during the Korean War.
Funeral services were held Saturday, February 5, at Laws-Carr-Moore Funeral Home, Milan, with Rev. Travis Gilbert officiating. Burial followed in the New Craven Cemetery in Milan. Military rites were provided by the Milan American Legion Post #235. Memorials may be given to the St. Jude’s Children's Hospital.

Herman "Walter" Albach, III
Herman "Walter" Albach, III, 82 of Osgood, passed away Saturday, February 5, 2011 at Manderley Health Care Center in Osgood. He was born July 4, 1928 in Cincinnati, OH, the son of Herman "Walter" and Martha Wehling Albach.
Survivors include daughter, Kimberly (David A.) Pierce Sr. of Milan; grandchildren, Jessica (Jeff) Hamm of Versailles, David (Esther) Pierce of Aurora, Robert (Cindy) Pierce of Milan; and eight great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by four sisters all of Cincinnati, Ohio:
Audrey Manzi, Olivia "Lee" Beerman, Virginia Hablutzel and Catherine Voss-Helfrich.
Mr. Albach graduated from North College Hill of Cincinnati, OH, and was a Korean Airforce Veteran and Navy reservist. He had worked in production control for Rotex Inc., which was Orville Simpson of Cincinnati, OH. Herman was a member of the Versailles American Legion.
Services are being held today, Tuesday, at Neal's Funeral Home, Osgood, with visitation from 12-1 p.m. with funeral services immediately following. Memorials may be given to the Versailles American Legion. Burial will be in the Cliff Hill Cemetery, Versailles. Neal’s Funeral Home, Osgood, is in charge of arrangements.

Earnest F. Brison
Earnest F. Brison, 68, of Delaware passed away Saturday, February 5, 2011 at the Margaret Mary Community Hospital in Batesville. He was born at Jeffersonville on July 11, 1942, the son of George and Helen Hostettler Brison. He was married to Mary Noel on April 9, 1968 and she survives.
Other survivors include two sons John (Chrissy) Brison of Benham and Justin (Amanda) Brison of Delaware, George Brison and Kelly Brison, both of Charlestown; one daughter Joy Faulkner of Minnesota; seven grandchildren; two sisters Helene Adcock and Delores "Pill" Pearson both of North Vernon; one brother Bob (Cathy) Brison of Nebraska. He was preceded in death by his parents, his son Christopher, and his sister Anna Mae Lozier.
Mr. Brison was a self-employed mechanic and operated Brison’s Garage in Delaware for 40 years. He had also worked at Hoosier Auto Parts in Osgood.
Memorial services will be held Saturday, February 19 at 1 p.m. at the Hope Baptist Church near Dillsboro with Pastor Tom Holt officiating. Memorials may be given to the donors choice in care of the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles.

Ethel Ross
Ethel Ross, age 100, of Osgood, passed away Sunday, February 6, 2011 at her home. She was born February 2, 1911 in Casey County, KY, the daughter of Frank and Martha Shell Hampton. She married James Tearl Ross in December of 1926 and he preceded her in death in 1973.
Survivors include daughters, Eva Joyce (Carl) Rice of Osgood, Ines (Oakley) Durham of KY; brother, Elmer Hampton of Lawrenceburg, nine grandchildren; and many great and great great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Arnold and Lloyd Hampton; and eight sisters, Lillie Thomas, Dora Norman, Stella Reynolds, Florence Rigdon, Ercie Creech, Alice Thacker, Lottie Chadwell and Lucy Godby.
Services will be held Thursday, February 10, at Neal's Funeral Home, Osgood, with viewing from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. and funeral services beginning at 1 p.m. Burial will be in the Cravens Cemetery, Milan. Memorials may be given to the family. Arrangements are being handled by Neal's Funeral Home, Osgood.

Deanna Kieffer
Deanna Cole Kieffer, age 73 of Florence, KY passed away on Wednesday, February 2, 2011 at Florence Park Care Center in Florence, KY.
Survivors include daughters: Gina Werner of Madison, and Debbie Kieffer of Erlanger, KY; sons: Mark Kieffer of Friendship, and Greg Kieffer of Napoleon; five grandchildren; and eight great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Martin Kieffer in 1993.
Mrs. Kieffer loved gardening and cooking.

Joan R. Calender, 71, of Elrod passed away Friday, January 28, 2011 at the Dearborn County Hospital in Lawrenceburg. She was born at Benham on December 19, 1939 the daughter of John and Grace Sedam Patton. She was married to Joseph "J.B." Calender on November 27, 1958 and he survives.


Other survivors include one daughter Jeanna Barnett of Cincinnati, OH; grandchildren Joseph Calender, Rebecca Haase, and Joshua Rogers; one great-granddaughter Natalie Calender; two brothers John Patton of Lawrenceburg and Jim (Barb) Patton of Hodgkins, Colorado. She was preceded in death by her parents and her sister Pat Taylor.
Mrs. Calender was a 1958 graduate of Aurora High School and completed training at the Moeller Cosmetology School in Cincinnati in 1964. She had worked as a beautician in Versailles, Milan, and Lawrenceburg. Joan was also in the process of obtaining her pilot’s license and had logged enough hours in training to begin soloing.
Funeral services were held Monday, January 31 at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles. Memorials may be given to Rescue 30 or the American Cancer Society in care of the funeral home

Martha E. Kelch
Martha E. Kelch, 89, a lifelong resident of Dillsboro, passed away Wednesday, January 26, 2011 at Dearborn County Hospital. She was born in Dillsboro on June 9, 1921 to Harry Niemeyer and Lula Lieve Niemeyer. In 1942 she married to Leslie L. Kelch and he preceded her in death in 1985.
Survivors include two sons, Tim (Pat) Kelch, and Terry (Susan) Kelch, both of Columbus; four grandchildren, Brett, Tiffany, Staci, and Darci; six great grandchildren, Ashley, Logan, Nick, Jake, Noah, and Lily; and three great great grandchildren.
Mrs. Kelch was a member of Dillsboro United Methodist Church for many years.
Funeral services were Monday, January 31, 2011 at Filter-DeVries Funeral Home in Dillsboro. Memorials may be made to her church or to the cancer fund or Oakdale Cemetery. Filter-DeVries Funeral Home, Dillsboro, was in charge of arrangements.

Paul L. Bible
Paul L. Bible, of Mosheim, TN, and formerly of Milan, passed away Friday, January 28, 2011 at his home.
Survivors include son, Jack (Roberta) Bible of Milan; daughter, Karen (Neal) Hazen of AL; one brother; five grandchildren; and eight great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Bible; sons, Ray, Paul Jr., and Danny Bible.
Mr. Bible was an avid fisherman and nature lover.
A memorial service was held Monday, January 31, at Christ United Methodist Church in Mobile, Alabama. Memorials may be given to the Pierceville United Methodist Church. Arrangements were handled by Radney Funeral Home, Mobile, Alabama.

Floyd Riggs
Floyd Riggs, 77, of Rexville, passed away Thursday, January 27, 2011 at the Mercy South Hospital in Fairfield. He was born in Cleves, Ohio on May 11, 1933 the son of William and Gladys Reed Riggs. He was married to Rita Lierer on August 30, 1952 and she survives.
Other survivors include one son Floyd D. (Linda) Riggs of Batesville; one daughter Kathy Brenner of Medora; grandchildren Eric Riggs of Seymour and Matthew Brenner of Medora; one sister Mabel McQueese of Aurora.
Mr. Riggs was a heavy equipment operator. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War where he served with the 11th Infantry Regiment. He received the Good Conduct Medal, Occupation of Germany Medal, and the National Defense Service Medal. He was a member of the Versailles American Legion.
Funeral services were held Monday, January 31 at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles with Rev. Garland Rudd officiating. The Versailles American Legion conducted military honors. Memorials may be given to the donor’s choice.
