Winter storm brings beauty

WANDA ENGLISH BURNETT PHOTO
The last blast of winter transformed this creek scene into a winter wonderland photo opportunity. The historic two arch stone bridge is located over Otter Creek west of Holton south of US 50. As seen by the trees growing on top of the old bridge, vehicles no longer use the bridge. While the winter weather brings a blast of beauty to some - it also packs a wallop to motorists. Troopers from the Versailles District of the Indiana State Police worked numerous crashes, slide offs, and other weather related calls during the winter storm last Thursday, January 20 when the fluffy stuff moved into the area. The post fielded hundreds of calls during a 24-hour period. Police remind motorists to reduce their speed, be aware of sudden stops, increase following distance between vehicles, remember bridges and overpasses will freeze before the rest of the road, hang up cell phones and drive with caution. They also remind motorists to move over, slow down when approaching emergency, state highway and recovery vehicles - it's the law. Ripley County Emergency Management Director Wayne Peace reported that Ripley County went to a Level One Snow Emergency/Yellow at 3:50 p.m. on January 20. This level tells motorists to be cautious and limit travel.
