Flannigan
Dorothy P. Flannigan, 91, of Dillsboro, passed away Wednesday,
December 22, 2010 at the Waters of Dillsboro Manor. She was
born March 1, 1919 in Cincinnati, Ohio, the daughter of Howard
C. Wynne and Lillian Mehans Wynne. On January 4, 1941 she married
Frederick C. Flannigan and he preceded her in death on July
21, 1969.
Surviving is her daughter, Carol (Ronald) J. Jones, of Aurora;
five grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; sister, Marie
Hoffman, of Ft. Wright, KY; daughter-in-law, Joan Flannigan,
of California. She was preceded in death by her husband, Frederick
Flannigan; two sons, Frederick Paul Flannigan and Michael Allen
Flannigan; her brothers, Robert, Paul, and Edward Wynne; one
sister, Catherine Wheeler.
Mrs. Flannigan was a graduate of Commercial High School and
worked as a cook at North College Hill High School for 20 years.
Funeral services were held Friday, December 24, at Filter-DeVries
Funeral Home in Dillsboro. Burial was in the Spring Grove Cemetery
in Cincinnati, Ohio. Filter-DeVries Funeral Home, Dillsboro,
was in charge of arrangements.

Sumler, III
Robert "Joey" Sumler III, 28 of Rexville, passed away
Thursday, December 23, 2010. He was born in Lawrenceburg, on
October 27, 1982, the son of Robert Joe and Tonya Beth Castner
Sumler.
Survivors include parents: Robert Joe and Tonya Beth Castner
Sumler of Rexville; brothers: Jason and Blake Sumler of Versailles,
Chad Sumler of Rexville and Nathan Beeman of Holton; grandparents:
Tim and Elizabeth Johnson of Osgood, Elbert Grace of Rising
Sun; and many aunts, uncles, and cousins. He was preceded in
death by his grandfather, Robert Joe Sumler, Sr. of Batavia,
OH and a grandmother, Eva Eversole of North Vernon.
Joey was a 2002 graduate of South Ripley High School and had
worked as a driller for the family business, Hoosier Drilling
Contractors of Rexville.
Visitation is being held today Tuesday, from 5-8 p.m. at Neals
Funeral Home, Osgood. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday,
December 29, 2010 at 11 a.m. at the funeral home. Burial will
be in the Holton West Cemetery, Holton. Memorials may be given

Anna May Vaughan, 88, of Batesville, passed away Saturday, December
25, 2010. Funeral services are being held today, Tuesday, at
12 noon at the Cook Funeral Home, Sunman. Visitation will also
be today from 10 a.m. until time of services at the funeral
home. Burial will be in the Zion Cemetery, Manchester. Memorials

Louis John "Lew" Kappes
Louis John "Lew" Kappes, 70, of Fairview, passed away
Saturday, December 25, 2010, at home. He was born August 5,
1940 in Enochsburg, the son of Raymond Bernard and Ethel Florentina
(Freel) Kappes. He married Judith A. Kappes on August 1, 1964,
and she survives.
Other survivors include two daughters, Andrea Kappes of Fairview
and Alice Kappes of Indianapolis; one son, Christopher (Christina)
Kappes of Fairview; nephew that he raised, Ben (Patti) Kappes
of Patriot; three grandchildren, Tyler Scott Kappes, Nathan
Bradford Kappes and Jacob Scott Schmerr; seven brothers, Martin
Kappes of Bennington, Richard Kappes of Holton, Norman Kappes
of Osgood, Frank Kappes of Fairview, Steve Kappes of Bennington,
John Kappes of Versailles, Alvin Kappes of Rising Sun; eight
sisters, Edna Yagami of Richmond, KY, Carolyn Bradley of Osgood,
Velma Armstrong of Rising Sun, Rosemary Hooton of Osgood, Regina
West of Versailles, Martha Peaslee of Versailles, Debbie Schmitt
of Osgood, Christina Hoff of Sunman; 59 nieces and nephews;
47 great nieces and nephews; eight great great nieces and nephews;
and aunt Frances Kappes of Highland Heights, KY.
He was preceded in death by his parents; niece Jennifer Kappes;
nephews Sadao Yagami, Jr., James Kappes, Jeffrey Bradley and
Joseph Kappes; brother-in-law Sadao Yagami, Sr., and two great
nieces and nephews; father and mother-in-law Paul and Nettie
Bradford.
Mr. Kappes graduated from Napoleon High School in 1958 and then
enlisted in the US Navy. Upon completion of his military service,
he began working at Cummins Engine Co., where over the years
he was an expediter, assembly worker and machine operator. During
his last few years at Cummins he worked as a machine operator
at the Holset Engineering Plant at Madison retiring in November
1996 after 34 years of service with Cummins.
Lew helped his father and father-in-law with their farming and
in 1970 he and his family moved to Judys family farm near
Fairview where they lived for 40 years. He was a member of Our
Most Sorrowful Mother Catholic Church in Vevay and also attended
St. Josephs Catholic Church at Warsaw, KY. He was a great
supporter of 4-H, FFA and many other charities helping children
and the underprivileged.
Funeral mass will be held Friday, December 31, at 11 a.m. at
the Our Most Sorrowful Mother of God Catholic Church in Vevay
with Father John Meyer officiating. Burial will be in the Vevay
Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m., Thursday, December
30, at the Haskell & Morrison Funeral Home, Vevay. The rosary
service will be prayed at 8 p.m. on Thursday at the funeral
home. Military rites will be conducted by the honor guard of
the Vevay American Legion Post #185 and the Vevay VFW Post #5396
at the Vevay Cemetery.
Memorials may be given to the Switzerland County 4-H Endowment
Fund, Switzerland County FFA Endowment Fund, the Community Foundation
of Switzerland County or the Ohio County 4-H Endowment Fund,

Lois Bryant
Lois Bryant, 97, of Benham, passed away Wednesday, December
22, 2010 at the Vitas Hospice and Rehab Center in Winter Park,
Florida. She was born on September 22, 1913 at Benham, the daughter
of David and Ida Fuehrer Risk. She married Linville Bryant on
March 17, 1935 and he preceded her in death on December 19,
1985.
Survivors include one daughter Carolyn Bryant of Orlando, FL;
ten grandchildren; ten great grandchildren; and two great great
grandchildren; one brother Glenn (Helen) Risk of Versailles;
one sister Violet Ellis of Hanover. She was preceded in death
by daughters, Mary Catherine Prescott, Myrna Rose Bryant and
Linda Rose Bryant, her brother Robert Risk and her grandson
Glenn Prescott.
Mrs. Bryant was a member of the Benham United Methodist Church
and the WSCS. She had worked as a nanny in Cincinnati, at the
White Pine Restaurant in Versailles and was also a homemaker.
Lois was an assistant for Farm Bureau at the Indiana State Fair
and was the leader of the Benham Thrifty 4-H Club from 1949-1966.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, December 29 at 11 a.m.
at the Benham United Methodist Church with Rev. Howard Bell
officiating. Burial will be in the Benham Cemetery. Visitation
is being held today, Tuesday, from 5-7 p.m. at the Stratton-Karsteter
Funeral Home, Versailles, and from 10 a.m. until time of services
Wednesday at the church. Memorials may be given to the church
or cemetery in care of the funeral home.
Hailey Marie Pyles
Hailey Marie Pyles, infant, of Aurora, passed away Saturday,
December 18, 2010 in Cincinnati, Ohio. She was born Monday,
September 20, 2010 in Cincinnati, Ohio, the daughter of Matt
and Sarah Pyles.
Survivors include her parents, Matt and Sarah Pyles of Aurora;
maternal grandparents, Randy and Lisa Marksberry of Milan; maternal
great grandparents, Garry and Donna Marksberry of Moores Hill;
great grandmother, Judy Werner of Osgood; paternal grandmother,
Bev (Wm.) Pyles of Aurora; paternal great grandmother, Helen
Locklear of Kettering, OH; maternal great great grandmother,
Ella Mae Huffman of Moores Hill.
Funeral services were held on December 23, at Milan Church of
Christ with Shawn McMullen officiating. Contributions may be

Youngman
Maryann Lucille Youngman, 83, of Osgood, passed away Sunday,
December 26, 2010 at Manderley Health Care Center, Osgood. She
was born June 13, 1927 in Shelby County, the daughter of Edward
and Ruth Maybee Schreiner. She married Cleo Youngman on July
15, 1943 and he preceded her in death on February 12, 1990.
Survivors include sons: James (Joyce) Youngman of Osgood, Michael
(Susan) Youngman of Madison, Robert (Barb) Youngman of Napoleon
and Thomas Youngman of Osgood; daughter: Carol (Steve) Spencer
of Batesville; 14 grandchildren; 23 great grandchildren; sisters:
Marie Herbert of Greensburg, Betty Jean Sandhage of Elizabethtown,
Joan Tebbe of Madison; brothers: Frank Schreiner of Greensburg
and Donald Schreiner of Carmel. She was preceded in death by
three brothers: Paul (Bud), John (Jack) and James Schreiner;
and one great grandchild, Justin Ricke.
Mrs. Youngman was a homemaker. She enjoyed cooking for weddings
and other church related events. She was a member of St. Maurice
Catholic Church of Napoleon.
Visitation will be held Wednesday, December 29 from 5-8 p.m.
at Neals Funeral Home, Osgood. Funeral services will be
held Thursday, December 30 at 10 a.m. at the St. Maurice Catholic
Church, Napoleon with burial in the church cemetery. Memorials

Earl Holmes Roe, 80 of Cincinnati, Ohio passed away Monday,

Theresa N. Worrall Noble, 101, of Madison, passed
away Saturday, December 18, 2010. Funeral services will be held
Thursday, December 23, at 11 a.m. at Morgan & Nay Funeral
Centre in Madison with burial in the Caledonia Cemetery near
Moorefield. Visitation will be Wednesday, from 4-7 p.m., and
Thursday, from 9 a.m. until time of services at the funeral
home. Memorials may be given to the Madison Senior Citizens

Lee Wells
Russell Lee Wells, 88, of Guilford, passed away
Thursday, December 9, 2010 at Shady Nook Care Center. He was
born November 24, 1922 in Dearborn County, the son of Doll Wells
and Grace (Anderson) Wells.
Survivors include a very special nephew, Ronald Allen; daughter,
Dixie (Bob) Shellenbarger, of Delphos, OH; two grandchildren,
Randy and Lisa; brother, Clayton Wells of SC; and many other
nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by three sisters,
Dorothy Dixon, Hazel Jackson and Pearl Kinnett, and several
brothers.
Mr. Wells served his country in the US Army from 1942-1944.
From 1944-1954 he was employed at Seagrams in production. He
then retired and worked the family farm for many years as well
as painted buildings.
A graveside service will be held this spring at East Fork Cemetery
in Guilford for his family. At Russells request, there
will be no visitation. Arrangements are entrusted to Filter-DeVries
Funeral Home in Dillsboro.
George
Anselm Nelson, Jr.
George Anselm Nelson Jr., age 78, of Dillsboro, passed away
Saturday, December 18, 2010 at University Hospital in Cincinnati,
OH. He was born on July 16, 1932, the son of George Anselm Nelson
Sr., and Grace Pophen Nelson in Norwood, OH. He married Luretha
Monroe and she survives.
Other survivors include one daughter, Vicki (Marc) Fontaine,
of San Antonio, TX, and two granddaughters, Danielle and Nicole.
He was preceded in death by one brother, one stepbrother, and
three stepsisters.
In 1953 George entered the US Army. He was employed at Baldwin
Piano Company for several years, until becoming a self employed
piano tuner and technician.
There will be no visitation or funeral services. Arrangements
are entrusted to Filter- DeVries Funeral Home in Dillsboro.
Patricia Licking
Patricia Licking, age 83, of Zephyrhills, FL, passed away Friday,
December 17, 2010 at Florida Hospital in Zephyrhills. She was
born in Cincinnati, OH on October 15, 1927, the daughter of
James D. Hill and Clare Curtis Hill. In 1948 she was married
to Gerald W. Licking, who survives.
Other survivors include one son, Steven (Cherry) Licking, of
Lake Mary, FL, and one daughter, Vicki (Richard) Schultheis,
of Hebron, IL, and twin granddaughters, Lindsey and Lauren Bradley.
Mrs. Licking lived in Rising Sun until 1967, when they purchased
a farm in Ohio County. In the early 1970's, Pat was employed
as a secretary at Beneficial Finance Company. In 1976 Pat and
her husband started the Tree House Restaurant. They retired
from the restaurant in 1984, when Pat became a cook at Dillsboro
Manor. She was a long time member of Dillsboro United Methodist
Church, where she was active in the Methodist Youth Fellowship.
Visitation will be held at the Filter-DeVries Funeral Home in
Dillsboro on Wednesday, Dec. 22, from 12 noon until 2 p.m. Funeral
services will be at the funeral home Wednesday at 2 p.m. Burial
will be in Oakdale Cemetery. Memorials may be given to the Heart
Association. Filter-DeVries Funeral Home, Dillsboro, is in charge
of arrangements.

(Leon) Holman
James (Leon) Holman, 68,
of Versailles passed away Sunday, December 12, 2010 at his home.
He was born at Springfield, Kentucky on October 6, 1942 the
son of Nelson and Katherine Bunch Holman. He was married to
Theresa Craig on September 21, 1985 and she survives.
Other survivors include two sons Dewey Holman of Madison and
Jim (Paula) Holman of Holton; two daughters Kathy (Jeff) Burton
of North Vernon and Becky (Kevin) Lee of New Marion; 15 grandchildren
and 18 great-grandchildren; one sister Bonnie (Dale) Benham
of Osgood. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Leon was a former employee of Cords Stone Quarry, North
Vernon Forge, and R. L. Byard and Sons Concrete Finishing. He
had spent the last several years as a self-employed concrete
finisher. Mr. Holman was a member of the Hope Baptist Church.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, December 15 at 11 a.m.
at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles with Pastor
Tom Holt officiating. Burial will be in the New Marion Cemetery.
Visitation will be today from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Memorials may
be given to the New Marion Cemetery or the Dearborn County Hospice.
Joan Louise
Venable
Joan Louise Venable, 51, of Batesville, passed away Wednesday,
December 8, 2010 at Methodist Hospital, Indianapolis. She was
born July 21, 1959, the daughter of Walter Bine & Shirley
Louise White Kemker. She married Jeffery James Ve-nable on November
8, 1975 at Delaware Methodist Church in Delaware and he survives.
Other survivors include her parents; daughter: Shannon (Chris)
Pope of Waldron; brother: Obie (Becky) Kemker of Wheat-land;
sisters: Kathy Duclaux of Harrison, OH and Gay (Shawn) Negangard
of Os-good; and grandchildren: Kayla Joan Pope and Skyler Peetz,
both of Waldron.
Mrs. Venable worked for Hill Rom in Batesville for 31 years.
She was a graduate from Indiana Wesleyan University in Marion
and attended Solid Rock Bible Fellowship Church in Na-poleon.
Funeral services were held Saturday, December 11, at Neals
Funeral Home, Osgood with burial in the Greendale Cemetery,
Os-good. Memorials may be given to the Ruth Lyons Christmas
Fund in care of the Neals Funeral Home, Osgood, who was

Leonard "Hank" E. Narwold
Leonard "Hank" E. Narwold, 80, of Batesville, passed
away Monday, December 13, 2010 at St. Andrews Health Campus
in Batesville. He was born on May 8, 1930, in Batesville, the
son of the late Fred C.H. and Lorena (Einhaus) Narwold. He married
Opal Wehr on June 24, 1950 at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Crossroads,
and she preceded him in death on October 29, 1996.
Survivors include daughters, Wanita Linkel and Pam K. Narwold,
both of Batesville; sons, Richard (Carol) Narwold and Timothy
Narwold, both of Batesville; eight grandchildren and 11 great
grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife,
daughter Melinda Narwold, sons James, David and John Narwold,
sister Mildred Kops, and one granddaughter.
Mr. Narwold was a member of the St. Paul Lutheran Church, Crossroads,
Batesville Lodge F&AM #668, and a Batesville High School
graduate. He retired from Farmers Feed in Batesville.
Visitation will be held Wednesday, Dec. 15, from 4-8 p.m. with
Masonic service at 8 p.m. at Meyers Funeral Home, Batesville.
Funeral services will be Thursday, December 16, 2010 at 11 a.m.
at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Crossroads, with Pastor Robin Owen
officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Memorials
may be given to the Batesville Kiwanis Kids & Us Program

Arthur O. Simmermeyer, 76, of Brookville, passed away Thursday,

Donald Ballard, 77, of Shelbyville, passed away Thursday, December
2, 2010 at Hospice of South Central Indiana (Bartholomew County)
Columbus. He was born January 28, 1933 in Saldee, KY, the son
of Henry and Alberta Clay Ballard.
Survivors include sons, Donald Eugene of Greensburg, Delbert
Lee of St. Paul, Michael Duane of Shelbyville and Bryan Clay
of St. Paul; daughter Barbara Jean Bowling of Versailles; eight
grandchildren; five great grandchildren; sisters, Lillian Bush
and Joan Oaks of Middletown, OH.
Mr. Ballard was a Navy Korean Veteran and had been a truck driver
for many years and had also worked for Pro-Pipe in Franklin,
OH.
Funeral services are being held today, Tuesday, December 7,
at Neals Funeral Home, Osgood, with visitation from 10
a.m. to 12 noon and funeral immediately following. Burial will
be in the Cliff Hill Cemetery, Versailles. Memorials may be

Robert L. Merz
Robert L. Merz, 68, of Milan, passed away Friday, December 3,
2010 at his home. He was born August 19, 1942, in Akron, Ohio,
the son of Robert and Angela (Morrelli) Merz. He married Cheryl
(Royer) Merz on June 14, 1969, and she preceded him in death
on October 22, 2003.
Survivors include son, Michael Merz of Georgia; daughters, Tammy
Merz of Akron, OH, and Kelly (Kelly) Ferreira of Milan, and
Terri Parks of Columbus, OH; brother, Terry Merz of Akron, OH;
and 12 grandchildren.
Mr. Merz had worked for Perrin Asphalt Construction Co. before
his retirement.
Funeral services are being held today, Tuesday, at 12 noon at
Laws-Carr-Moore Funeral Home, Milan, with Rev. Darrell Thayer
officiating. Burial will follow in New Craven Cemetery at Milan.

James F. Kelly, 73, of Dillsboro, passed away Friday, December
3, 2010.
He was the father of James R. (Sheila), Thomas A. (Jan), Linda
M. (Mike) Grimmer, Donald A. (Sheila), and Ginger L. Kelly;
grandfather of ten; great grandfather of six; companion of Vivian
L. Guenther; brother of Patricia A. Yahn, Mary E., Michael J.
and the late John J., Daniel P. and Patrick D. Kelly.
He retired from Proctor & Gamble after 38 years of service.
Mass of Christian burial will be held today, Tuesday, at Holy
Trinity Church in Norwood, OH, at 9:30 a.m. Memorials may be
given to the Margaret Mary Community Hospital in Batesville.

Shirley Mae Taylor, 75, of Milan, passed away Friday, December
2, 2010 at St. Frances Hospital in Beech Grove. She was born
July 1, 1935, in Cincinnati, Ohio, the daughter of William Cecil
and Allie Frances Bryant (Beasley).
Survivors include a son, Greg Taylor of North Vernon; daughters,
Jacqueline (Michael) Whitaker of Shelbyville and Tamyra (Paul)
Brunner of Lawrenceburg; sisters, Wanda Teer of Milan and Ilene
Billingsley of Lawrenceburg; seven grandchildren; and two great
grandchildren. She was preceded in death by brother, Ronnie
Beasley and sister, Patsy Satchwill.
Ms. Taylor worked at Thatcher Glass, Batesville Casket Co.,
Grand Victoria, and the Aurora WalMart.
