Janet C. Morningstar Speer
Janet C. Morningstar Speer, 66, of Dallas, Oregon, passed away Tuesday, September 21, 2010 at a Portland area hospital. She was born January 18, 1944, in Winchester, the daughter of William Morningstar and J. June Hancock Morningstar Heston.
Survivors include mother, J. June Heston of Warsaw; sister, Deborah Griffith of Warsaw; brother, Dave (Molly) Morningstar of Fort Wayne, daughter Jill (Rick) Marlette; sons, Mike (Patricia) Miller and Dennis Miller; grandchildren, Stacie Marlette and Kristie Snape, Ashley and Austin Miller, and Alex and Kyra Miller; step-children, Lana (Kenny) Hughes, Carla (Richard) Ketchum, Leonard (Paula) Speer, Casey (Christy) Speer, Donna (Todd) Kastner, Richard (Karol) Speer, Cindy (Rick) Weber, and Jacob Speer; and numerous step grandchildren, great step grandchildren, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins. She is also survived by her significant other, Ron Gonsorowski of Dallas, Oregon.
Ms. Speer was a teacher at South Ripley Junior, Senior High School for 25 years before retiring to Dallas, Oregon in 2001.

Larry P. Sedam, Sr.
Larry P. Sedam, Sr., 78, of Lexington, passed away Friday, September 24, 2010 at his home. He was born August 15, 1932 in Cross Plains, the son of Benjamin Harrison and Lillie Cordelia Thornton Sedam. He mar-ried Juanita Scudder and she preceded him in death on January 1, 1994.
Survivors include three daughters, Joyce (Larry) Aldridge of Deputy, Patty (Allen) Dew of Hanover, Kim (John) Garland of Lexington; son, Larry P. (Tammy) Sedam, Jr. of Lexington; sister, Betty Brown of Madison; special friend and caregiver, Shirley Gray of Deputy; seven grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; one great great grandchild; special niece Sharon Brown; several nieces, nephews and other relatives. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, granddaughters: Kristie Aldridge and Ashley Sedam; brothers: Ernest, Gilbert, Leslie Wilbur Sedam; sisters, Emma Cutter, Virginia Schwanholt and Mary Gerding Waltz.
Mr. Sedam resided most of his life in Jefferson County and was a 1951 graduate of Central High School. He was inducted into the US Army and served during the Korean War in the Motor Pool. He was honorably discharged and returned to Jefferson County. He was employed with Indiana Kentucky Electric Corp in Madison and retired after 33 years as a maintenance supervisor. He also farmed all his life and worked for the Armstrong family. He was a faithful member of the Paynesville Christian Church.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Sept. 29, at 11 a.m. at Morgan & Nay Funeral Centre in Madison with Bro. Joe McKay and Pastor Mike Cammack officiating. Burial will be in the Kent Cemetery in Kent. Visitation is being held to-day, Tuesday, from 3-8 p.m. and Wednesday from 9 a.m. until time of services at the funeral home. Flag presen-tation at the graveside by Jefferson Post 9, of the American Legion.

Marvin L. "Bud" Myers
Marvin L. "Bud" Myers, 74, of Deputy, passed away Friday, September 17, 2010 at the Hanover Rehabilitation Center. He was born on November 1, 1935, in Anderson, and was the son of the late Stanley and Edna (Henderson) Myers.
Marvin was a graduate of Pendleton High School and retired from Ford Motor Company in 1992 after 35 years. He was a member of UAW Post 1111, was an avid woodworker, and devoted husband. He will be particularly well-remembered for his remarkable sense of humor and his abiding love for Christ.
Marvin will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 55 years, Sue Carroll (McClammer) Myers; daughters, Cheryl (Steve) Althoff of Cross Plains, and Kelly (Ronnie) Hatcher of Wilkinson; sons, Reese (Mickey) Myers of Columbia City, and Darren (Brenda) Myers of Scottsburg; nine grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; sister, Bonnie (Carl) Crull; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his infant sister, Marilyn Myers.
His family would like to say thank you to everyone that visited him or prayed for him during his illness. The family would also like to say thank you to Dr. Totten and all the nurses and CNAs at Hanover Rehabilitation Center for all your kindness and help during our time of preparing for the loss of our loved one.
Friends may call from 11 a.m. on Tuesday, September 21, with services following at 1 p.m. at Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home, Versailles. Brother Randy Thieman will officiate. Burial will follow at St. Paul Lutheran Cemetery, Olean. Following the graveside service, lunch will be provided by the women of St. Paul Lutheran Church. Charlene M. (Charly) Peters
Charlene M. (Charly) Peters, 78, of Madison, passed away Friday, Sep-tember 17, 2010 at the Manderley Health Care Center in Osgood. She was born January 29, 1932 in Fort Wayne, the daughter of Howard Bowers and Juanita Yaekel. She married Gerald R. Peters on March 20, 1954, and he survives.
Other survivors include two daughters, Teresa (Terry) Thixton of Pekin, and Katherine "Kathy" (Carl) Taul of Versailles; three sons, Michael H. (Kathy) Peters of Indian-apolis, Bryan C. (Beth) Pe-ters of Urbana, and Craig A. (Tomya) Peters of Gosport, Australia; one sister, Reta (Dewitt) Friend of Plain City, Ohio; 14 grandchil-dren; two great grandchil-dren; sister-in-law, Donna (John) Yaklevich; brother-in-law, Daniel (Helene) Peters; and several nieces and nephews. She was pre-ceded in death by her parents and one infant daughter, Christina Peters.
Mrs. Peters was a retired director of the Madison-Jefferson County Public Li-brary where she worked for 30 years. After graduating from Ohio State University in 1954 with a degree in journalism, she worked at the newspaper in White Plains, N.Y. She was a 1950 graduate of West High School in Columbus, Ohio.
Charly was of Lutheran Faith but attended Prince of Peace Catholic for several years. She was a founding member of the Girls Club and the Welcome Wagon in Madison. She was a mem-ber of the Daughters of the American Revolution, American Association of University Women PSI IOTA SI Sorority, Friends of the Library and a Girl Scout Leader.
Funeral services will be held Friday, September 24, at 3 p.m. at Vail-Holt Fu-neral Home Hilltop Chapel with Rev. John Meyer offi-ciating. Visitation will be from 2 p.m. until time of services at the funeral home on Friday. Memorials may be given to the Friends of the Library or Daughters’ of the American Revolution. Elenora "Elly" Ann Schuerman

Elenora "Elly" Ann Schuerman, of Osgood, passed away Monday, September 20, 2010 at her home. She was born September 15, 1920, the daughter of Wm. Jacob and Rosella M. Yager Hill. She married Joseph Andrew Schuerman on April 11, 1944 and he preceded her in death on April 6, 1993.
Survivors include sons, John (Kathy) Schuerman of Batesville, Joseph Schuerman, Jr. and Jack (Denise) Schuerman, both of Osgood; daughter, Mary Jo (Rick) Hackman of Osgood; son-in-law, Ty Peters of Lebanon, Ohio; brothers, Wm. and John Hill of Versailles; sister, Ruth Mary McCreary of Beechgrove; 12 grandchildren; and three great grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by one daughter, Sue Peters, and one sister, Martha Hooten.
Mrs. Schuerman was a member of the St. Maurice Catholic Church in Napoleon and also the church ladies group, NCCW. She lived on the family dairy farm that she and husband, Joe, had ran and operated for many years. Elly was a past member of the Versailles American Legion Ladies Auxiliary.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, September 23, at 10 a.m. at St. Maurice Catholic Church, Napoleon with burial in the church cemetery. Visitation will be held Wednesday, September 22, from 5-8 p.m. at Neal’s Funeral Home, Osgood.

Clyde C. Allen Jr.
Funeral services will be held for Clyde C. Allen Jr., 74, of Versailles, on Friday, September 17 at 10:00 a.m. at the Versailles Baptist Church. Rev. Mike Cantrel and Rev. Mike Allen will officiate.
Visitation will be held Thursday, September 16 from 4-8 p.m. at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles and also on Friday from 9 a.m. until time of services at the Versailles Baptist Church. The Versailles Lions Club will hold a memorial service Thursday at 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Graveside services will be held Friday, September 18 at 1:30 p.m. at the Lexington Cemetery in Lexington, Kentucky.
Mr. Allen had served as the Ripley County extension agent for 30 years and was a member of the Indiana Extension Educators Association.
He was a charter member of the SIRDP and a charter member of the Ripley County Community Foundation.
Mr. Allen was a member of the Versailles Baptist Church where he served as a Sunday School teacher, deacon, choir member, and moderator.
He was also active in the Versailles Lions Club serving as a trustee to Camp Woodsmoke as well as many district offices. He was a past Lion of the Year, a Sagamore of the Wabash, and a Kentucky Colonel.
Mr. Allen was born at Lexington, Kentucky, on September 3, 1936, the son of Clyde C. Allen Sr. and Evelyn Rose Allen. He married Edna Stinson on August 17, 1957 and she survives.
Other survivors include a daughter, Kathy (Scott) Gratrix of Castle Rock, Colorado; three sons Robert (Sharon) Allen of Charlestown; Keith (Tammy) Allen of Madison, and Steve (Sharon) Allen of Georgetown; 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; one sister Annette (Buford) Cobb of Pee Wee Valley, Kentucky two brothers, John (Cheryl) Allen of Beaver Creek, Ohio and Jim (Sherry) Allen of Val Rico, Florida.
Mr. Allen was preceded in death by his parents and a brother Bruce Allen.
He was a 1954 graduate of Lafayette High School in Lexington and received his BS degree in agriculture from the University of Kentucky in 1958.
Memorials may be given to the Ripley County Community Foundation, the Versailles Lions Club or the Versailles Baptist Church in care of the funeral home.

Ruth Harrietta Bryant Higbie
Ruth Harrietta Bryant Higbie, 80, of Marysville, formerly of Madison, passed away Wednesday, September 8, 2010. Funeral services are being held today, Tuesday, at 10 a.m. at the St. Patrick Catholic Chapel in Madison with burial in the St. Patrick Cemetery. Clifford "Cliff" Sparks

Clifford "Cliff" Sparks, 84, of Milan, passed away Wednesday, September 8, 2010 at Margaret Mary Hospital at Batesville. He was born August 8, 1926, in Milan, the son of Edwin and Emma (Felix) Sparks. He married Norma M. (Waldon) Sparks on November 11, 1949 and she survives.
Other survivors include son, James (Dorothy) Sparks of Lawrenceburg; daughters, Judy (Tom) Thompson of St. Paul and Janey Volz of Milan; brother, Fred Sparks of Versailles; sister, Eva Delay of Versailles; five grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; and one great great grandchild. He was preceded in death by a grandson, Tommy Brewington, one sister and four brothers.
Mr. Sparks retired from the Milan Furniture Factory after 30 years of service. He served his country in the US Army during WWII. He was a member of the Milan First Baptist Church, the Milan VFW and the Milan American Legion.
Funeral services were held Saturday, September 11, at Laws-Carr-Moore Funeral Home in Milan with Pastor Harris Long officiating. Burial was in the New Craven Cemetery in Milan. Military graveside rites were by Milan American Legion Post #235. Memorials may be given to the Milan Rescue Unit or Milan First Responders. Laws-Carr-Moore Funeral Home, Milan is entrusted with the arrangements.

Robert W. Burkett

Robert W. Burkett, 55, of Versailles passed away Saturday, September 11, 2010 at the Dearborn County Hospital in Lawrenceburg. He was born at Batesville on October 2, 1954 the son of Omer and Peggy Sharp Burkett.
Survivors include three sons, David Burkett and his fiancé Courtney Marley of Vincennes, Isaac Burkett of Versailles, and Israel Burkett and his fiancé Jessica Gress of Osgood; one grandson Alexander Burkett; one sister, Patricia (Randy) Ent of Seymour; sister-in-law, Shirley (Max) Mingee of Bloomington and six nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Captain William Burkett, and his sister Sherilyn Sue Bessler.
Mr. Burkett was a 1973 graduate of Milan High School and was a former employee of Tru-Temper of North Vernon. He was a member of the Hope Baptist Church in Dillsboro.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, September 15 at 10:30 a.m. at the Hope Baptist Church with Pastor Tom Holt officiating. Burial will be in the Riverview Cemetery at Aurora. Visitation is being held today, Tuesday from 5-7 p.m. at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles and from 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday until time of services at the church. Memorials may be given to the donors choice in care of the funeral home.

Eugene Hewitt
Eugene Hewitt, 64, of Madison passed away Thursday, September 9, 2010 at the Veteran’s Hospital in Louisville. He was born at Milan on March 24, 1946 the son of Wilford and Mabel Taul Hewitt.
Survivors include his mother Mabel Hewitt of Versailles; one son Micah (Angela) Hewitt of Batesville; one daughter Sarah (Ryan) Tekulve of Batesville; five grandchildren; three brothers Howard Hewitt of Crawfordsville and Jerry (Tammy) Hewitt and Dennis (Janet) Hewitt both of Versailles.
Mr. Hewitt was a 1964 graduate of Versailles High School and had served in the US Army. He was currently manager at the Key West Shrimp House in Madison and had also completed training to become an ordained minister. Mr. Hewitt was also a licensed cosmetologist and hair stylist having operated shops in Indianapolis, Versailles and Osgood.
Funeral services are being held today, Tuesday, at 11 a.m. at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles with Rev. Richard Burcham officiating. Burial will be in the Indiana Veterans Cemetery at Madison. Visitation will also be Tuesday from 9:30 a.m. until time of services. Memorials may be given to the Versailles American Legion in care of the funeral home.

Gerald "Jerry" Phillippe
Gerald "Jerry" Phillippe, 54, of Gulfport, MS, formerly of Osgood, passed away Saturday, September 11, 2010 at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Biloxi, MS. He was born February 7, 1956, at Batesville, the son of Earl Keith and Nita May Wheeler Phillippe.
Survivors include his parents; and sister, Holly Marie (Robert W.) Peters of Vevay. He was preceded in death by one brother, Earl "Arlo" Phillippe.
Mr. Phillippe was a 1973 graduate of Jac-Cen-Del High School and was a navy veteran where he had served as a navigator the last three years on a nuclear submarine. Jerry was a master plumber and a certified scuba diver. He was a member of the Gulfport American Legion.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, September 16, at 11 a.m. at Neal’s Funeral Home, Osgood with visitation on Wednesday, September 15, from 5-8 p.m. also at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Delaware Cemetery, near Osgood. Arrangements were handled by Neal’s Funeral Home, Osgood.

Anna Louise (Asche) Schmaltz
Anna Louise (Asche) Schmaltz, 90, of Milan, passed away Thursday, September 9, 2010 at Dearborn County Hospital at Lawrenceburg. She was born January 20, 1920, in Holton, the daughter of Frank Phillip and Rose Mae (Palmer) Asche. She married Edgar Schmaltz on March 7, 1942 and he preceded her in death on May 28, 1988.
Survivors include brother, James Asche of Hagerstown; nieces, nephews and grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband and one son, Scott Schmaltz in 1999; three sisters and three brothers.
Mrs. Schmaltz was a homemaker and a member of the Pierceville United Methodist Church.
Services were held Monday, September 13, at the East Hill Shrine Mausoleum at Rushville, with Rev. Jack Bible officiating. Memorials may be given to the Pierceville United Methodist Church through Laws-Carr-Moore Funeral Home, Milan, who was in charge of arrangements.

Geneva Cox
Geneva Cox, 68, of Moores Hill, passed away Wednesday, September 8, 2010 at Deaconess Hospital in Cincinnati, Ohio. She was born on August 15, 1942 in Hamilton, Ohio, the daughter of Jesse Barrett and Rebecca (Jones) Barrett.
Survivors include children, Benjamin Joseph (Darlene) Cox of Moores Hill, Thomas James Cox, of Moores Hill, Marie Ann (Monroe) Davidson of Franklin, OH, and Geneva Barrett Gould, of Batesville; 13 grandchildren; three great grandchildren; one brother, Benjamin Joseph Barrett; six sisters, Juanita Light, Lorrine Hampton, Roberta Hensley, Virginia Anderson, Janet Mays, and Peggy Baker. She was preceded in death by her parents, one son, Willy Elmer Cox on August 26, 2008; one grandson, Justin Tyler Gould in 2000; and two brothers, Wayne and Allen.
Geneva was a homemaker and attended the Holiness Church in Moores Hill.
Funeral services were held Saturday, September 11, at Filter-DeVries Funeral Home in Dillsboro with Rev. James Cox officiating. Burial was in the Forest Hill Cemetery, Moores Hill. Memorials may be given to the family. Filter-DeVries Funeral Home, Dillsboro was in charge of arrangements.

Gilda Emelia Levi

Gilda Emelia Levi, age 91 of Milan, passed away September 9, 2010 at Dearborn County Hospital. She was born January 16, 1919 in Genova, Italy to the parents of Amedeo & Maria Bertolinni Cotto. She married Joseph Lowell Levi on December 26, 1946 in Chiavari, Italy and he preceded her in death on April 2, 1994.
Survivors include daughters, Maria (Loren) Davis of Osgood and Pina (Norman) Knudson of Holton; eight grandchildren; and 16 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Bruno and Renato Lanza, and one grandson, Joe Knudson in May 1992.
Mrs. Levi had worked as a garment seamstress for the Carol Cook Factory in Greensburg. She had been a resident at Ripley Crossing, Milan, since November 2003.
Funeral services were held Sunday, September 12, at Neal’s Funeral Home, Osgood. Memorials may be given to the American Red Cross. Cremation will follow. Arrangements handled by Neal's Funeral Home, Osgood.

Virginia Irene McVay
Virginia Irene McVay, 82, of Milan (Manchester), passed away Wednesday, September 8, 2010. Funeral services were held at Cook Funeral Home, Sunman, on Monday, September 13 with burial in the St. Paul Cemetery, also in Sunman. Memorials may be given to the Manchester Life Squad or to the First Church of God. Cook Funeral Home, Sunman, was in charge of arrangements.

Jeremy Alan Garrett

Jeremy Alan Garrett, 34, of Louisville, Kentucky, formerly of North Vernon, passed away on Wednesday, September 1, 2010 at his home. He was born on March 9, 1976, in Seymour, the son of Thomas and Linda Robison Garrett of North Vernon.
Surviving are his parents; grandmother, Stella Robison of Bargersville; two brothers, Rodney (Heida) Garrett of North Vernon and Christopher (Larissa) Garrett of Versailles; seven nieces, Tricia and Samantha Garrett, both of North Vernon, Michelle Garrett of Greensburg, Ashley Franklin, Janna Lloyd, Suzanne and Ellie Fiset, all of Versailles; two nephews, Johnathan Garrett of North Vernon, and Tony Lloyd of Versailles; two uncles, Maurice (Dianne) Robison of North Vernon, and Pat (Jo) Garrett of Seymour; two aunts, Reva (Larry) Porter of Bargersville, and Rita (Stanley) Hall of Southport.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, M. Eldon Robison, Carl O. Garrett and Ica M. Garrett; an aunt Twila Banister, and an uncle Donald Banister
Mr. Garrett was a 1994 graduate of Jennings County High School and received his associate degree from Jefferson Community & Technical College in Louisville, KY. He was employed at Jefferson Community & Technical College as an IT Support Specialist since 2007. Before that he worked for UPS in Louisville, Lowes Distribution Center in North Vernon, Mac-TAC in Walesboro, and EISAN in Seymour. Jeremy attended 1st Church of Nazarene in Seymour.
Funeral services were held Saturday, September 4 at Dove-Sharp & Rudicel Funeral Home in North Vernon with Rev. Mark Wooten officiating. Burial was in the Hayden Cemetery in Hayden. Karla Kaye Grubbs
Karla Kaye Grubbs, 67, of Columbus died Saturday, August 28, 2010 at Hospice of South Central Indiana.
She was born February 27, 1943 in Beech Grove the daughter of Carl and Leila Richardson. She is survived by her sister, Donna (William) Kreinhop of Hope; nieces, Alixia (Jim) Worman of Greenwood and Kristina (Brent) Burns of Beech Grove; great niece, Anabel Burns of Beech Grove and great nephew, Nolan Burns of Beech Grove.
Her parents preceded her in death.
She was a nurse and had graduated from IU School of Nursing in 1969. She had worked at hospitals in California, Indianapolis and Columbus. She was a member of the Osgood Baptist Church. She loved stamp collecting and reading and was very artistic.
A memorial service was conducted Thursday, September 2 at 7 p.m. at Norman Funeral Home in Hope with Evelyn Brown officiating.
Cremation is planned.
