Good quality water for the town of Versailles is one step closer
to a reality, according to town board President John Holzer. At
the regular meeting on Thursday, August 12, Holzer explained that
Hoosier Hills Regional Water District has prepared a proposal
that would provide water from Brookville at a very reasonable
cost to the towns of Versailles, Napoleon, Holton and Osgood.
A viable source of good quality water for the town has been a
concern for the board due to the rising costs of treatment. According
to Holzer, Hoosier Hills Regional Water District is ranked third
in the country.
Holzer noted Hoosier Hills will pay for all costs of hookup with
the exception of one pump. He is unsure if the town of Osgood
is interested in connecting with Hoosier Hills. He expressed an
interest in meeting with the Osgood Town Council to further discuss
the proposal.
Becky Ostholhoff and Todd Williams expressed concerns regarding
the proposed closure of an alley for the construction of the Gold
Star Chili. According to Ostholhoff, the proposed closure would
interfere with her driveway. The board tabled the issue pending
further information.
Chief Ben Sieverding, Versailles Fire Department, reported 73
calls for service in July including one house and one kitchen
fire. The department received a grant from the Department of Homeland
Security to purchases hoses.
Town attorney Larry Eaton reported that letters have been sent
to three homeowners regarding the unsafe building ordinance. Holzer
noted that the council will continue to address unsafe buildings
throughout the town.
Town Marshal Joe Mann reported a total of 190 calls for July including
nine theft investigations, 39 citizens assisted and one accident
investigation. The department served two warrants, made two arrests,
and issued 11 citations and 42 warnings.
Water and Street Department Superintendent Kevin Hensley requested
the board consider the purchase of a small trailer for the mowers.
The board unanimously approved the purchase of a stainless steel
spreader box. Hensley reported the employment of one part-time
employee.
Meetings for September and October will be held on the first Thursday
at 7 p.m. Those members in attendance were John Holzer and Sue
Meisberger, with Denessa Benkie absent. The next meeting will
be on Thursday, September 2 beginning at 7 p.m. at the Versailles
Town Hall.
