Sheriff's office investigates drug activity in Osgood

According to information from the Ripley County Sheriff’s Office, suspicious activity led to the arrest of a Michigan man Tuesday, July 20 in the early morning hours.

Ripley County Sheriff’s Deputy Abraham Hildebrand was patrolling the Osgood area in the early morning hours and saw four males who were acting in a suspicious manner. They were near the intersection of Walnut and Railroad Avenue.

Upon investigation, Caleb A. Smith, 23, of Lake Orion, Michigan, was arrested for Possession of Marijuana. Delving further into the scene, Deputy Hildebrand would find that Elgin V. Fidell, 22, Versailles, had been involved in an altercation with Smith, prior to the deputy’s arrival. This involved a drug transaction, according to police.

Smith was incarcerated at the Ripley County Jail on the marijuana charge pending a $550 bond.

Charging information for Fidell has been forwarded to the prosecutor’s office with initial charges of Dealing Marijuana and one count of Battery, pending an investigation.

Two other males who were involved in the incident were questioned and released when they were found not to be participating in any criminal activity according to police.
