Milan students will see a few new faces when they return this fall. Three new teachers were approved for employment at the regular meeting of the Milan School Corporation Board of Trustees at their June meeting.

Emily Kugler will teach high school Spanish; Laura Hicks will teach high school Art and Leah Fullenkamp will fill the Speech/Pathologist position.

Sherrie Cunningham spoke to the board regarding the process of posting extracurricular positions. According to Cunningham, several of these positions were filled in the past by teachers who have done them for years.

Cunningham noted that the jobs were posted in the office and available for anyone to apply. She explained that some of the teachers were hurt and suggested the board consider asking the teachers and coaches who have done it in the past if they are still interested in that position before posting the jobs. The board noted they would consider the suggestion.

Issues regarding the current health insurance policy were brought to the attention of the board. Currently, insurance for those teachers who retired or were let go by the school lost their coverage in June.

In the past, the insurance policy was through August. The board was requested to reconsider the decision in order for those former employees to find affordable health insurance.

Students who participate in a sport will have the opportunity to receive credit towards PE. According to high school principal Rich Healy, the student will receive one credit per semester towards the two credit requirement.

Healy noted that this will provide flexibility for the student to take an academic class in place of PE. The board unanimously approved the policy.

In personnel, resignations included Judy White as middle school newspaper sponsor and middle school academic team coach; Todd Yates as high school boys’ track coach and Dara Stutler as high school music/choral teacher.

Extracurricular recommendations approved were Debra Johnson as elementary yearbook sponsor with Carla Holt as volunteer sponsor; Anita Boggs as volunteer FFA sponsor; and Ryan Langferman as summer weight lifting instructor.

In other business:

• Text book adoptions, lab fees and text book rental fees were approved.

• Field trip requests approved were the 8th grade trip to Washington, D.C. in May 2011 and the SADD trip to Vincennes.

• The board unanimously approved these fundraisers: 8th grade raffle and chili supper; the middle school sale of cookie dough; girls’ basketball team golf scramble; and the band’s sale of magazines.

All board members were in attendance. The next meeting will be on Monday, July 19 beginning at 7 p.m. at the administrative office.
