County
council has full agenda

The October
19 meeting of the Ripley County Council
had a packed agenda with many items
to hear.
Under additional appropriations the
council unanimously approved:
$20,000 for the Scour
Plan of Action. This is a state
mandated program for bridge safety
according to Robert Reiners, president
of the commissioners. He further noted
that 80% of the money was to be reimbursed.

Milan
School Board moves ahead with project

The Milan School
Board was updated on several funding options
for projects at the elementary and middle
schools at the regular meeting held Monday,
October 19. According to corporation attorney
Larry Eaton, applications for a Qualified
Zone Academy bonds and Qualified Construction
bonds have been filed.
According to Eaton, the Qualified Zone Academy
bonds allow schools to sell bonds to fund
projects. These non-interest bearing bonds
are paid back within 15 years and allow
the purchasers to receive a tax credit.
Qualified School Construction bonds are
for projects less than $2 million for the
renovation of existing buildings.

Just send a self-addressed, stamped
envelope along with a check made out
to Ripley Publishing Company and mail
it to PO Box 158, Versailles, IN 47042.
There is no limit on tickets. All
major credit cards are taken so tickets
can be purchased by phone by calling

A good portion
of the Ripley County Council meeting held
October 19 was devoted to granting appropriations
for the health department, as requested
by Pat Thomas, administrator for the county
health department.
The money, which comes from federal funds,
was appropriated for Thomas for operating,
supplies and equipment as the H1N1 vaccine
gets in full swing.

heroes honored at chamber event

Its an honor
to get an award for something we love to do,
Henry and Jerry Walker noted as they accepted
an award for their dedication to sports at Milan.
The couple was among others named as unsung
heroes for their dedication to local school
sports at the Ripley County Chamber of Commerces
17th Annual meeting held October 22 at the South
Ripley Elementary School Cafeteria.

Domestic
violence - the hits keep coming

While strides
have been made through education,
public awareness, law enforcement,
and prosecution, there is still a
lot of work to do when it comes to
curbing the vicious cycle of domestic
violence.
Fifty-one people died in a one year
period in the State of Indiana as
a result of domestic violence, according
to the Indiana Coalition Against Domestic
Violence (ICADV).

What
are you going to be for Halloween? Area
children pose this question to their friends
while making preparations for an evening
of trick-or-treating, parties, parades and
costume contests.
The festivities in Versailles will begin
on Thursday, October 29 from 5-7 p.m. A
parade and costume contest will be sponsored
by the Versailles American Legion with prizes
going to the scariest, prettiest, the most
original, as well as other categories
Osgood, Milan, Holton and Napoleon will
conduct trick-or-treat on Saturday, October
31 from 5-7 p.m. Trick-or-treat for Sunman
residents will also be on October 31 from
6-8 p.m.

Former
Hill-Rom employee found guilty of Selling Stolen
Property, tools from Hill-Rom

Nearly two years
after a Hill-Rom employee was confronted
about selling company tools on a popular
auction website, eBay, he was found guilty
in Ripley County Superior Court of those
crimes.
According to information from the Ripley
County Prosecutors Office, a jury
returned a guilty verdict last Friday, convicting
Neil M. Stinger, 32, of Connersville, for
Selling Stolen Property. The verdict came
after a two-day trial that was prosecuted
by Chief Deputy Prosecutor Ryan King.

teacher thankful for RSRF grant allowing technology
in his class

Jac-Cen-Del Elementary
School sixth grade teacher Travis Rohrig demonstrated
the use of technology in the classroom to board
members at the regular meeting held on Wednesday,
October 14. According to Rohrig, technology improves
the motivation and test scores of the students
as well as improves instruction, often decreasing
the time it takes to prepare lessons.
Rohrig received a grant from the Rising Sun Regional
Foundation for $6200 that was used to enhance
the current curriculum for math and science, as
well as other areas. Equipment such as an interactive
white board screen, DVD, VCR player, projector
and speakers are used daily during lectures.

from USDA to promote economic growth

The idea of partnering
with agencies to help promote economic
growth in Ripley County has paid off.
Ripley County Economic Development Executive
Director Gary Norman was pleased to
receive a grant from the USDA Rural
Business Enterprise, saying, This
will definitely help our county.

students learn about renewable energy

Nearly 100 fourth graders from
South Ripley Elementary School were recently
able to see what they had been learning about
when they took a field trip to Southeastern
Indiana REMC.
The day was windy, which is exactly what will
be needed for the 60' wind turbine that was
erected in the front yard of the electric
cooperative on Buckeye Street in Osgood.

to hold annual meeting

The Ripley County Chamber
of Commerce will hold their Annual Meeting
on Thursday, October 22 at the South Ripley
Elementary School on Benham Road, Versailles.
The theme for the evening will be centered
around high school sports with the chamber
offering Christmas ornaments for salefeaturing
each of the four high schools in Ripley
County, Batesville, Jac-Cen-Del, Milan and
South Ripley.

Concert to bring more than
music to Ripley County

A free concert will benefit the
Fishes and Loaves Food Pantry, which in turn will
help many families through the upcoming winter
months, according to Bob McCreary one of the supporters
of the event. McCreary is the pastor of the Holton
Christian Church.
National Christian Artist Mitch McVicker will
be giving a concert at the Damm Theatre in Osgood
this Sunday, October 18 beginning at 6:30 p.m.

man arrested, charged in domestic dispute

Ripley County Prosecutor Ric Hertel
has filed formal charges of Possession of a Firearm
by a Serious Violent Felon, Strangulation and
Domestic Battery against Clifford H. Winters Jr.
(Doc), 44, of Osgood.
Those charges stem from an incident that occurred
on August 30 when Winters is accused of going
to his wifes home at 146 W. Wilson Street
in Osgood where she says he beat and strangled
her, according to the Affidavit for Probable Cause.

was a busy one for the Osgood Town Marshal,
John Hegge. One investigation led to
another and in the end six adults were
arrested and four minor children removed
from homes.

ladies prove age is no barrier when it comes
to love

One stitch at a time coupled
with one colored photo, and the chain begins
for another quilt that will give warmth to
the newest members of the world with love
from some ladies at the St. Paul Lutheran
Church, Olean.
Known as the Martha Circle, the ladies meet
the second Thursday of each month to work
on their exclusive project, making quilts
for newborn babies.

made in Triplett's Drug Store break-in

On Saturday, September
19 about 5:15 p.m. the front window
of the Tripletts Drug Store in
Osgood was broken out in an attempted
break-in.
