Raiders defend Tyson to claim upset victory over
the JCD Eagles - Reclaim Ripley Publishing "Pride Trophy"
in the process
Gary Franklin, Sports Editor
In what is being projected to be the last South Ripley Raider
home stand, with Tyson Auditorium as their home court, the Raiders
defended their castle by winning the last scheduled regular
season game on Fri., Feb. 22.
Many special events have graced the walls of the gym over its
years of service to the Versailles community, and especially
to South Ripley High School boys basketball program in the most
recent years. Many memories of which have been rekindled during
this year's home games held at Tyson.
This evening, all former coaches, principals, athletic directors,
etc., were honored along with the senior boys on the basketball
team, with special mention made of certain individuals in attrendance.
Jimmy Hyatt had been on duty directing traffic for every home
game held at Tyson since its beginning. John Sexton was recognized
as having attended every home and away Raider game since 1966,
excluding the one year when he was in the service. All in attendance
whom had played or yelled in the gym were asked to stand and
be recognized. Most all in attendance had yelled while in the
gym.
Kellie Collier was recognized for having been selected as the
2008 Girl's Basketball ORVC Mental Attitude Award winner. The
five senior boys basketball team players, rcognized with their
parents were BJ Sieverding, Trent Tucker, Erik Demaree, Chris
Miller and Kyle Patrick.
A special standing ovation was given varsity boys' basketball
senior team manager Anthony Gramaglia, following the reading
of his feelings about times he had spent at Tyson. His comments
ending with a call for the Raiders to defend Tyson one last
time.
Did his speaking stir a brighter desire in his team, that they
would fight to the end for the win? God only knows for certain..
But certain is the fact also that they responded with an unexpected
victory at games end in the least.. Gramaglia's speech was included
in the handout at the ticket areas on game night and will be
included as a part of Thursday, February 28 edition of hThe
Versailles Republican follow-up story about Tyson and SR.
The sign across the front of the stage read; "Thanks for
the Memories", and with the Raider victory over the Eagles,
one more happy one was added to the Raider collection of satisfying
finishes made in Tyson Auditorium.
