Milan Indians redefine "tough" against the ranked 2-A Triton Central Tigers

Gary Franklin - Sports Writer

In their last regular season game, the Indians were supposed to fold up their tents and go home with their tail tucked between their legs, on Friday, October 14, against a Triton Central football team ranked #10 in 2-A play. The Tigers found much despair as the Indians jumped on them hard, leading by 14-0 in the first half and holding on for the win at games end by the score of 20-18.

The game not only helps to build momentum for the Indians as they prepare for their first sectional competition at Edinburgh on Friday, October 21 with a game time of 7:00 p.m., but raised them to second place in their Conference.

The Indians are part of the MIFC (Mid-Indiana Football Conference) consisting of:

1st place at 5-0, Indian Creek

2nd place, Milan, at 4-1

3rd place, Triton Central, at 3-2

4th place, North Decatur at 2-3

5th place, South Decatur at 1-4

6th place, Edinburgh at 0-5
THE GAME

The first drive by the Indians was for 69 yards, of which 61 were rushing yards gained, involving 10 plays and finalized by a Bob Stanley touch down (10 yard) run, and a Pennington kick for the extra point for a 7-0 score.

In the following action, the Indians were able to refrain the Tigers from scoring and took possession on the 39 yard line. The following seven plays ended with a Rusty Ison to Derek Pennington 10 yard touch down pass for 6 and a follow up of a Pennington extra point kick, thus a 14-0 score in the first quarter of action.

Triton Central tried for the 4th and

5 play near the end of the first half that the Indians were able to contain and took over the ball on the 14 yard line. The score at halftime remained 14-0 Milan.

The third quarter found the Tigers more aggressive on offense as they were able to score three times for 18 points and take a lead of 18-14 over the Indians to begin the fourth. In the fourth the Indians were again able to put together a drive down the field allowing for an Ison to Pennington 20 yard completion for the touch down and an Indian lead of 20-18.

An unsportsmanlike conduct penalty following the touchdown drove the Indians back for the extra point attempt that went awry leaving the score 20-18 Milan. The Triton Tigers drove to the 6 yard line where on 2nd and goal were on the verge of scoring the go ahead touchdown.

A Rusty Ison, of the Indians, interception gave Milan control of the ball with near 6:00 minutes left in the game. Milan controlled the ball until only seconds remained in regulation. The Tigers attempt was for naught and the Indians won 20-18.

Rivalry between Eagles and Raiders remains healthy

Gary Franklin - Sports Writer

The sports rivalry between the Jac-Cen-Del Eagles and the South Ripley Raiders remains in tact. Not only in the sport of basketball via the Turkey Shoot Out, but in all school sporting events. The best part is that when it's over, neighbors and friends are just that, neighbors and friends, and they don't have to drive 200 miles to enjoy their kids schools sporting events.

The final regular season game of Jac-Cen-Del Lady Eagle Volleyball got underway on Tuesday, October 18 while hosting the South Ripley Lady Raiders. Mr. Mark Meyer, JCD athletic director and teacher, introduced the teams and officials for the evening. Eagle senior, Amanda Harmeyer sang the National Anthem, and the game was on.

Although the final score gave South Ripley a victory, and taking nothing away from their effort, a hard fought battle for both teams would lie between the start and finish of the evening of volleyball action.
Game one

With a flip of the coin at mid-court by the official, South Ripley senior Kristen Huss prepared to serve. On the whistles blow, off it went followed by an Abbey Lemon kill for the first point of the game. The game advanced to a 3-1 Raider lead as Huss served.

Eagle senior Tiffany Downey watched as her first serve fell short into the net followed by Raider senior Sheena Braley's attempt at the serve which ended in an Eagle score, 4-2. Eagle Abbey Lauber served, 4-3. Raider Erica Burress's serve gained the Raiders a point 5-3 then 5-4.

A Lemon kill off Eagle Olivia Newhart's serve took the score to 6-4. Raider Lemon's serve went long and out of bounds, 6-5. Lady Eagle Abby Rohlfing's serve ended up as a Raider point, 7-5. Again a long serve as Ashley Thomas sailed her serve deep for an Eagle score, 7-6. Eagle Emily Einhaus serving had no better luck than those serving before her as again just one serve and out at the Braley again served an ace and Lemon again dropped a dink in the Eagle court for the 24-24 tie. Another ace serve by Braley and again Lemon followed suit with another dink to earn the 26-25 victory over the Eagles and a 2-2 tie in the match requiring a fifth and final game to decide the match.
Game five- for THE MATCH

Following a coin flip, the teams remained on their respective ends from the last game and again senior Lady Eagle Downey opened the game with the serve. Scoring first at 1-0, then 1-1 from, (of all things), a Lemon dink. Senior Raider Braley's serve ended up as a point for JCD at 2-1. Eagle Lauber served to a 3-2 score. Following Raider Burress's serve, a Lemon dink tied the game for its second time at 3. The ensuing kill by Eagle Einhaus put the Eagles back up at 4-3.

Eagle Newhart served to the score of 5-4 followed by an ace serve by Raider Lemon knotting the game at 5. The Eagles gained the lead at 6-5 followed by a tie at 6. The Eagles again took the lead at 7-6, and Raider Webster's dink tied the game at 7.

The Lady Raiders grasped their first lead at 8-7 off the serve of Adams followed by an 8-8 tie. A short serve attempt by Lady Eagle Huff gave the Raiders a 9-8 lead, and brought Raider Huss to the line where at the score of 10-8 Eagle Coach Sebastian called for the time-out.

An ensuing Huss serve ended with a Lemon kill and a 11-8 score followed by an Eagle Newhart dink taking the score to 11-9 and giving the serve back to the Eagles. From the Downey serve, another Newhart dink edged the Eagles to 11-10, then to the 11-11 tie before Raider Coach Jett called for the time-out.

A kill by Lemon on the Eagles serve placed the Raiders back in the lead at 12-11. Braley served for the Raiders and a Lemon dink elevated their lead to 13-11. Coach Sebastian of the Eagles called a time-out. The Braley serve and the Lemon kill raised the Raider score to 14-11. Raider senior Braley rose to deliver her last serve in regular season play and the Raiders won the point for a 15-11 game win and a 3-2 edge for the match win. The Raider reserve team won back to back by the scores of 25-23 and 25-23. Eleven seniors participated in their last regular season competition this night. Senior Eagles included Olivia Newhart, Angela Hildebrand, Tiffany Downey and team manager, Lindsay Payne. Senior Raiders included Bridgette Adams, Sheena Braley, Kristen Huss, and team managers Stephanie Miller, Kari Moore, Kristi Moore, and Annette Sieverding.
