Alfred W. Canada
Alfred W. Canada, 63, of Versailles passed away Saturday, February 19, 2005 at
the Christ Hospital in Cincinnati, OH. He was born September 24, 1941 in Benham
the son of William and Ruth Rheinfrank Canada and they preceded him in death.
He married Betty Wooley Canada on March 9, 1963 in Osgood and she survives.
Mr. Canada had worked for Romweber Furniture Co. as a sander until 1982. He was
also a member of Cedar Creek Community Church.
Survivors include his wife Betty Wooley Canada of Versailles; two sons, Al Canada
of Georgia and Rick Canada Sr. of Somerset, KY; two daughters, Rachel Furlow
and her husband, Denis of Versailles, Carol McIntosh and her husband Shawn of
Greensburg; two sisters, Pauline Souders of Osgood and Barbara Wood and her husband
Don of Versailles; five brothers, Floyd Canada and his wife Shirley of Vevay,
Donald Canada of Holton, Larry Canada and his wife Barbara of Holton, David Canada
and his wife Nancy of Holton, Kenny Canada of Versailles; seven grandchildren,
Joshua and Ashley Furlow, Andy and Cody Canada, Robert, Kayla and Ricky Canada
Jr.; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Amy Marie Canada in 1971;
and two brothers.
Services will be at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, February 23 at Bovard -Holt-Furst
Funeral Home with Rev. Garland Rudd officiating.
Friends may call from 5-8 p.m. today, Tuesday, February 22 and 11 a.m. on Wednesday
until services at Bovard-Holt-Furst Funeral Home, 319 S. Adams St. in Versailles.
Burial will be in Tanglewood Cemetery in Versailles. The family request memorial
contributions be given to the American Diabetes Fund or the Alfred Canada Memorial
Fund. Cards will be available at the funeral home.
Dorothy E. Roell
Dorothy E. Roell, 84, of Batesville, died Tuesday, February 15, 2005 at the Waters
of Batesville. She was born July 3, 1920 in Benton County the daughter of Bernard
Batta and Elizabeth Lithman Batta, both deceased. She married Raymond Roell
on April 26, 1949 at St. Peter's Church and he survives.
Other survivors include two daughters, Marilyn Todd of Sunman, Sharon Eckstein
of Sunman; three sons, James Roell of Batesville, Earl Roell of Batesville, David
Roell of Indianapolis; four sisters, Delores Hoffbauer of Harrison, OH, Florence
Heinrich of Cincinnati, OH, Leona Weiler of Sunman, Viola Westrich of Noblesville;
three brothers, Richard Batta of Sunman, Bernard Batta of Sunman, Arnold Batta
of Batesville; and ten grandchildren. She was preceded in death by three brothers,
Howard, Raymond and Clifford Batta and one grandson.
Mrs. Roell was a cook at Jawacdah Farms and Hillcrest Country Club before retiring.
She was also a member of the St. Louis Catholic Church and the St. Louis Ladies
Society.
Funeral services were held Saturday, February 19 at St. Louis Church with Rev.
Daniel Mahan officiating.
Burial was in the St. Louis Cemetery. Memorials may go to the Care Givers Support

Laura (Elston) Copeland, 83, of Rising Sun, died Friday, February 18, 2005 at
Shady Nook Care Center in Lawrenceburg. She was born April 12, 1921 in Cross
Plains the daughter of James Thomas Elston and Laura Agnes (Webster) Elston,
both deceased. She married Ross P. Copeland on February 1, 1942 and he preceded
her in death on August 19, 2003.
Survivors include four sons, Gene and wife Jo Copeland of Breckenridge, CO, Lanny
and wife Mica Copeland of Frisco, TX, Gary and wife Judy Copeland of Rising Sun,
Monte and wife Sheila Copeland of Austin, TX; one daughter, Susanne Copeland
Fortune of Tallahassee, FL; one brother, Raymond and wife Hazel Elston of Shelby,
NC; one sister, Lola Wood of Winter Haven, FL; twelve grandchildren; and thirteen
great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Clarence and
Lawrence Elston and two sisters, Grace Stephenson and Clarise Elston.
Mrs. Copeland was a bookkeeper for Cross Plains State Bank and Rising Sun State
Bank. She purchased Central Hardware in Rising Sun in 1963. She was also the
bookkeeper and co-owner of Village Hardware in Dillsboro, Hilltop Hardware in
Clemons, FL and Valley Supply in Rising Sun. She was a graduate of Central High
School in Jefferson County and a member of the Gideon's Auxiliary and the Rising
Sun Church of Christ.
Visitation will be held Sunday, February 27, 1-3 p.m. at Markland Funeral Home
in Rising Sun.
Funeral services will follow visitation at the funeral home at 3 p.m. with Brother
Greg Matthew officiating.
Burial will be in the Rising Sun New Cemetery. Memorials may go to the Rising
Sun Church of Christ Building Fund, Gideons, Rising Sun Fire Department or the

Leroy Hinman
Leroy Hinman, 58, of Florence, died Monday, February 21, 2005 at University
of Louisville Hospital, Kentucky. He was born May 18, 1946 in Ohio County the
son of Roy E. and Lillie M. Bocock Hinman, both deceased. He married Vicky
Smith Hinman on September 30, 2000 and she survives.
Other survivors include two sons, Terry Hinman of Fairview, Tracy Hinman and
wife Melissa of Florence; one daughter, Tandra Hinman of Virginia; six grandchildren;
one sister, Ruth Shadday and husband Dwight of Vevay; two brothers-in-law,
Edward Leo Hammond of Florence, Chuck Manuel of Bennington; one sister-in-law,
Alice Hinman of Versailles; and several nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Myron Hinman and Donald Hinman; three
sisters, Marjorie Mae Manuel, Gladys E. Hammond and Marietta Grace Hinman.
Mr. Hinman served in the United States Army Reserves. He was a self-employed
auto body finisher, having owned and operated several auto body shops, including
Swiss Auto Body and Hinman's Auto Body in Vevay. He was a member of the Vevay
American Legion Post 185.
Visitation will be held Wednesday, February 23, 5-7 p.m. at the Haskell & Morrison
Funeral Home, Vevay. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, February 23,
7 p.m. at the funeral home with Rev. Tom Rogers officiating.

Bess" Bartling
Sylvester J. "Bess" Bartling, 95, of Batesville,
died Wednesday, February 16, 2005 at Hospitality Hall in
Batesville. He was born January 25,
1910 in Morris the son of Herman Bartling and Mary Retzner Bartling, both deceased.
He married Hilda E. Bartling on May 17, 1941 at St. Louis Church in Batesville
and she survives.
Other survivors include numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death
by one infant daughter, Judy Bartling; one sister, Leora Volz; and two brothers,
Francis and Paul Bartling.
Mr. Bartling was a music teacher at Batesville Public Schools for 32 years
before retiring. He was a member of St. Louis Church and the Knights of Columbus
Council #1160. He also played trumpet for the Eureka Band and was the director
of the St. Louis choir from 1940 to 1980.
Funeral services were held Saturday, February 19 at St. Louis Church with Rev.
Christiaan Kappes officiating.
Burial was in the St. Louis Cemetery. Memorials may go to the Gibault School
for Boys.

Audrey Elizabeth Emery, 69, of Dillsboro, died Friday, February 11, 2005 at Dearborn
County Hospital in Lawrenceburg. She was born September 12, 1935 in Milan the
daughter of Omer E. Sheldon and Mary Albright, both deceased. She married Floyd
Emery, Jr. and he survives. She was a homemaker.
Other survivors include one son, Floyd O. Emery III of Dillsboro; four daughters,
Mary (Emery) Kissel of Lawrenceburg, Carrie (Emery) Bruns of Milan, Cindy (Emery)
Monroe, Barbie (Emery) Lewis of Versailles; one brother, Elmer James Sheldon
of Fremont, OH; two sisters, Virginia Deisenroth of Fremont, OH, Dora Vinup of
Milan; eleven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in
death by two sisters, Doris Grossman and Ruth Burris and one grandson, Michael
Bruns.
Funeral services will be held today, Tuesday, February 15, 11 a.m. at Ulrich
Filter Funeral Home in Dillsboro.

David D. Roberts
David D. Roberts, 74, of Dillsboro, died Friday, February 11, 2005 at Dearborn
County Hospital in Lawrenceburg. He was born December 24, 1930 the son of Joe
C. Roberts and Mamie S. Ward, both deceased. He married Margaret Fox and she
survives.
Other survivors include one son, David D. Roberts, Jr. of Dillsboro; one daughter,
Maureen Jackson of Aurora; one brother, Willard Roberts of St. Petersburg, FL;
one sister, Ora Alsop of Cross Plains; and one grandchild.
Mr. Roberts served in the Air Force from August 5, 1950 until August 24, 1954.

Funeral Home in Dillsboro.

Frances Eichel
Frances Eichel, 81, of Aurora, died Tuesday, February 10, 2005 at Dearborn
County Hospital in Lawrenceburg. She was born April 15, 1923 in Whitewater
Township,
OH the daughter of Zedoc "Tobe" and Emma (Coldwell) Johnson, both
deceased. She married Wallace Eichel on September 14, 1940 and he preceded
her in death on December 22, 1969.
Survivors include one son, Cary "Butch" (Pam) Eichel of Brooksville,
FL; companion of many years, Merlin Essert of Aurora; two sisters, Ruth Meyer
of Aurora, Nellie McQueen of New Haven, OH; and one grandson, Matt Eichel.
Mrs. Eichel was a member of the Mt. Sinai Methodist Church. She was retired from
the food service department of Dearborn County Hospital.

Helen M. (Mathews) Cochrane, 85, of Vevay, formerly of Madison,
died Wednesday, February 9, 2005 at Swiss Villa Living Center
in Vevay. She was born July 10,
1919 in Switzerland County the daughter of Otis Mathews and Minnie (Brindley)
Mathews Rayl, both deceased. She married James F. "Mose" Cochrane on
May 11, 1963 and he preceded her in death on December 8, 1989.
Survivors include one brother, James Cecil "Petie" Mathews of Vevay;
nieces and nephews who care for her, Bonnie Detraz and husband Edsel, Phyllis
Christman and husband Ronald of Bennington, Sharon Johnson and husband Dave of
Madison, Kathy Scott and husband Grady of Taccoa, GA; Linda Ricketts and husband
Larry of Edinburgh, JoAnn Hartzell and Patsy Jane Hartzell of Michigan, Nelson
Mathews and wife Betty of Vevay, Raymond "Bimbo" Mathews and wife Bonnie
of Moorefield, Mickey Mathews of Vevay, Jim Mathews of Vevay, Charles Evans and
William Hartzell of Michigan; and several nieces, nephews, great nieces, great
nephews, cousins and other relatives. She was preceded in death by her stepfather,
Jeff Rayl and one sister-in-law, Louise Mathews.
Mrs. Cochrane was a 1938 graduate of Vevay High School. She was employed with
the Madison State Hospital in clerical, accounting and fiscal management. She
was awarded the Sagamore of the Wabash by Gov. Evan Bayh on May 13, 1993. She
was also a life member of Madison Trinity United Methodist Church.

Funeral Home in Vevay with Rev. Nancy Harmon Chizmar officiating.

Henry Marion "Tob" Scott, 93, of Madison, formerly
of Hanover, died Friday, February 11, 2005 at King's Daughters'
Hospital in Madison. He was born
August 11, 1911 in Florence the son of Omer Scott and Nora (Bales) Scott, both
deceased. He married Mildred Eleanor (Bennett) on July 21, 1956 and she survives.
Other survivors include two daughters, Marlene Cryar and husband Terry of DeRidder,
LA, Diane Anderson and husband Jim of Madison; one son, Mark Allen Scott of Rising
Sun; seven grandchildren; nine step-great-grandchildren; and several nieces,
nephews and other relatives. He was preceded in death by four sisters, Clara
Korf, Eunice Fitzgerald, Laura Bodey and Avis Miller; five brothers, Harry, Clinton,
Everett, Ward and Gilbert Scott; and two infant siblings.
Mr. Scott worked early in life at Pearl Packing Company in Madison and later
worked for the Indiana Department of Transportation, Aberdeen Unit driving a
truck. He was inducted into the U.S. Army on February 1, 1943 at Ft. Benjamin
Harrison in Indianapolis. He served during World War II in the 255th Field Artillery
Battalion rising to the rank of Private First Class. He was honorably discharged
on December 29, 1945 receiving the EAME Theater Ribbon with four Bronze Stars,
the Good Conduct Ribbon and World War II Victory Medal. He was also a member
of the Vevay American Legion Post #185 and the Vevay VFW Post #5396.
Funeral services will be held today, Tuesday, February 15, 11 a.m. at Haskell & Morrison
Funeral Home in Vevay with Rev. Ronald Sandidge officiating.
Burial will be in the Florence Cemetery in Florence with military rites conducted
at graveside by the Vevay American Legion and the Vevay VFW Post.

James C. Brunemann
James C. Brunemann, 76, of Ripley Crossing in Milan, formerly of St. Peter, died
Wednesday, February 9, 2005 in Milan. He was born September 5, 1928 in Cincinnati,
OH the son of Robert and Colette (Tasset) Brunemann, both deceased. He married
Joan Schulte on October 28, 1950 in Cincinnati, OH and she survives.
Other survivors include three daughters, Beverly Schwegman (Terence) of St. Mary,
Nancy Konradi (Kenneth) of Batesville, Connie Parker (Richard) of Williamsburg,
OH; three sons, James R. Brunemann (Mary Lynn) of Crescent Springs, KY, Dennie
Brunemann (Joann), Robert Brunemann (Elsie) both of Sunman; three brothers, Albert
Brunemann of Ft. Myers, FL, Richard and Roy Brunemann both of Bonita Springs,
FL; nineteen grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death
by one brother, Robert B. Brunemann.
Mr. Brunemann retired from R.B. Brunemann & Sons, Inc. He was also a member
of St. Louis Catholic Church in Batesville.
Mass was held Saturday, February 12, 12 noon at St. Louis Catholic Church with
Fr. Daniel Mahan officiating.

Leah Demaree Panarisi
Leah Demaree Panarisi passed away February 12, 2005. She was a member of the
Daughters of the American Colonists, the Caroline Scott Harrison Chapter of
the Daughters of the American Revolution and a fifty-year member of the Rebekah
Lodge #116. She was a past member of the Indianapolis 500 Festival Associates
serving on and chairing their Arts Committee.
She helped in the forming of Project Partnership and served as chairman of its
Placement Committee. She was active as a volunteer for many years with the American
Heart Association.
She is survived by her sisters, Ruth Mendenhall of Nevada, Missouri, Evelyn Strubbe
and Carol Evans of Versailles and brothers, Robert Demaree of Satelite Beach,
FL and Merrill Demaree of Indianapolis.
She was the widow of Vincent C. Panarisi. There will be no calling and the service
is private.

Miriam C. (Stegemoller) Obendorf, 87, of Versailles, died Sunday, February 13,
2005 at Thornton Terrace in Hanover. She was born January 12, 1918 in Olean the
daughter of George Stegemoller and Laura Fisse Stegemoller, both deceased. She
married Louis Obendorf on May 22, 1937 and he preceded her in death on September
9, 1988.
Survivors include three daughters, Rita Black and husband David of Okeana, OH,
Donna Roach and husband Wayne of Edmond, OK, Barbara Eades and husband Donald
of Versailles; two sons, Ralph Obendorf and wife Kay of Ithaca, NY, Paul Obendorf
and wife Cheryll of Versailles; two brothers, Harold Stegemoller and wife Bea
of Versailles, Louis Stegemoller and wife Eunice of Versailles; twelve grandchildren;
and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one brother, Henry
Stegemoller; one sister, Lucy Merritt; and one grandson.
Mrs. Obendorf worked at Mills Department Store in Madison, J&J Fabric Store
in Madison and Halcomb Home Center in Versailles. She was a member of St. Paul's
Lutheran Church in Olean and was a 4-H leader for the Friendly 4-H Club for over
25 years. She was also a member of the Willing Workers Home Ec Club, Martha Circle
of St. Paul's and W.E.I.C.A.
Visitation will be held Wednesday, February 16, 4-8 p.m. at Bovard-Holt-Furst
Funeral Home in Versailles and also 10 a.m. until time of services on Thursday,
February 17 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Olean.
Funeral services will follow visitation on Thursday at 11 a.m. at St. Paul's

Aleda Goodpaster
Muriel Aleda Goodpaster, 89, of Dillsboro, died Friday, February 11, 2005 at
Ross Manor in Dillsboro. She was born March 10, 1915 in Ripley County the daughter
of John Prue Eaglin and Margaret Grabus, both deceased. She married Carl Goodpaster
and he preceded her in death. She was a cook.
Survivors include three sons, Ronald Goodpaster of Dillsboro, Robert Goodpaster
of Versailles, Kenneth Goodpaster of Aurora; three daughters, Marietta McClellan
of Dillsboro, Janet (Goodpaster) Oak of Dillsboro, Kay Scott of Aurora; one brother,
Ivan Eaglin of Elrod; twelve grandchildren; thirteen great-grandchildren; and
two great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Denzil
and Raymond Eaglin.

Paul T. Herbert
Paul T. Herbert, 78, of Brownsburg, died Friday, February 11, 2005 at his residence.
He was born August 8, 1926 in Batesville the son of Ed G. Herbert and Elizabeth
Tunny, both deceased. He married Mary Herbert and she preceded him in death.
Survivors include seven daughters, Sharon Lewis of Lizton, Rita Slayman of Mooresville,
Therese Knight of Texas, Paula Frost of Mooresville, Margie Grabner of Brownsburg,
Kathy Price of Brownsburg, Karen (Tudy) Dramann of Brownsburg; three sons, Tommy
Tunny of Brownsburg, Ernie Tunny of Pittsboro, Mark Tunny of Tampa, FL; one brother,
Thomas Herbert of Bainbridge; one sister, Rosemary Brinkman of Batesville; five
step-sisters; twenty-nine grandchildren; and twenty-six great-grandchildren.
Mr. Herbert owned and operated Paul Herbert Builders for 55 years retiring in
1997. He was a US Navy veteran of WWII and a member of St. Malachy Catholic Church
in Brownsburg.
Funeral services will be held today, Tuesday, February 15, 10 a.m. at St. Malachy
Catholic Church in Brownsburg with Fr. Dan Staublin officiating.
Burial will be in the St. Malachy Cemetery in Brownsburg. Memorials may go to

Ralph Houston
Ralph Houston, 67, of Versailles, formerly of Milan, passed away Wednesday, February
9, 2005 at his residence. He was born at Falmouth, KY on December 11, 1937
the son of Barnett and Leo Mains Houston.
Mr. Houston is survived by his friend, Lorena Houston of Milan; son Anthony Powell
of Shelbyville; daughter Virginia Lee Houston of Indianapolis; and two grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his son, James Russell; brothers Eddie, Jimmie and
Bill; and sisters Carol and Betty.
Mr. Houston was a self-employed welder. He was a member of the Amvets at Versailles
and the Sons of the Legion at Osgood.
Funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family. Memorials may
be given to the donor's choice.

1993 in Madison the son of Brian L. Thorne and Mary M. Hertz Thorne.
Survivors include his mother, Mary M. (Hertz) Thorne and her fiancÈ, Tom
Spry of Madison; father and stepmother, Brian L. and Scarlet Thorne of Canaan;
three sisters, Janet D. Hertz and Heather N. Hertz-Simmons, both at home, Sarah
B. Thorne of Hanover; two brothers, Darrin L. Thorne and Bobby R. Thorne both
at home; one stepbrother, Brennan Green at home; maternal grandparents, Albert
and Betty Haviland Hertz of Hanover; paternal grandparents, Barbara Thorne of
Hanover, Walter "Bim" Ralston of Hanover; step grandparents, Mary Taylor
of Madison and Edward and Jackie Owen of Canaan; paternal great-grandfather,
Gayle Ralston of Hanover; several aunts, uncles and cousins. He was preceded
in death by his great-grandparents, Allison "Jackie" Ralston, Bobby
Thorne, Gilberta Thorne, Charles and Louise Katherine Rousch Hertz, Roscoe Haviland
and Flora Franklin Haviland.
Mr. Thorne attended Southwestern Elementary School from kindergarten through
fourth grade. He was currently a fifth grade student at the Canaan Elementary
School. He was active in the Lide White Boys and Girls Club, the Hanover/Southwestern
Soccer League and also played on the Jefferson County United Soccer U-11 Boys
Travel Team. He attended the Hanover Baptist Church.
Funeral services were held Monday, February 7 at 11 a.m. at the Calvary Baptist
Church, Madison with Pastor JD Traylor and Pastor Joe Maldonado officiating.

Chloe E. (Kenton) Atkins, 81, of Vevay, died Friday, February 4, 2005 at the
King's Daughters' Hospital, Madison. She was born December 24, 1923 in Fleming
County, Kentucky the daughter of Simon Kenton and Ara (Woodward) Kenton. She
married Ed Atkins and he preceded her in death.
Survivors include one stepson, Clarence Atkins and wife Linda of Olathe, Kansas;
two grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; one brother, Ray Kenton and wife
Dottie of Union, Kentucky; four nephews; four nieces; several great nieces and
nephews and other relatives; and caregiver, Libby Ray and family of Vevay. She
was preceded in death by two brothers, Donald and Roger Kenton; and two sisters,
Martha Acito and Lida Moore.
Mrs. Atkins was employed in Newport at the Tag Company for several years, later

several years in Newport and later at the Main Street Grill in Vevay. She was
a member of the Vevay American Legion Ladies Auxiliary Post #185 and the Vevay
VFW Ladies Auxiliary Post 5396. She attended the Switzerland Baptist Church in
Vevay.
Funeral services will be held today, Tuesday, February 8, 10 a.m. at the Haskell & Morrison
Funeral Home, Vevay with Rev. Ronald Sandidge and Rev. Howard Wade officiating.
Burial will be in the Saint Joseph New Cemetery, Cincinnati, Ohio. Memorials

Donald E. Hess
Donald E. Hess, 74, of Indianapolis, died Thursday, January 27, 2005 at his residence.
He was born April 12, 1930 in Osgood the son of Clarence W. and Laura E. Hess.
He married Rose Lock on July 14, 1983 and she survives.
Other survivors include three sons, Jimmy, John, and Emmett Hess; four daughters,
Laura (Chuck) Sterling, Karen Mitchell, Mary Jane Floyd and Jolie Hackworth;
a stepson, Christopher "Ike" Aldendorf; two sisters, Wanda McCormick
and Marcella Reynolds; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was
preceded in death by his parents and a son, Steven Hess.
He was employed for 20 years by the Indianapolis Star and News as a District
Sales Manager, having retired in 1994. He was a member of Bethal Family Worship
Center and the VFW Post #2839. He was a veteran of the US Army and the Air Force.
Funeral services were held January 31 at the Forest Lawn Wilson St. Pierre Funeral
Home with Rev. Russell Hylton officiating. Burial was in the Forest Lawn Memory
Gardens Cemetery.
Dwight McKenzie
Dwight McKenzie, 89, of Indianapolis, formerly of Vevay died Friday, February
4, 2005 at the Altenheim Community Health Center in Indianapolis. He was born
October 13, 1915 in Switzerland County the son of John McKenzie and Stella
(Joyce) McKenzie, both deceased. He married Christine (Peelman) on January
12, 1934 and she survives.
Other survivors include two sons
, Jerry McKenzie and wife Brenda of Beavercreek, Ohio, Darrell McKenzie and wife
Pat of Martinez, GA; four grandsons, Derrick, Dwayne, Jeff and Craig; three great
grandsons, Lance, Simon and Conner; one great granddaughter, Katelyn; several
nieces, nephews and other relatives. He was preceded in death by three sisters,
Mollie Netherland, Hessie and Leona Leap; and four brothers, Herman, Forrest,
Robert and Charles McKenzie.
Mr. McKenzie was a member of the Switzerland Baptist Church.
Visitation will be held Tuesday, February 8, 5-8 p.m. at the Haskell & Morrison

Edna Geraldine (Kennett) Turner, 70, of Madison, died Saturday, February 5, 2005
at The Water's of Clifty Falls, Madison. She was born February 12, 1934 in
Switzerland County the daughter of Walter E. Kennett and Nola B. (McClellan)
Kennett, both deceased. She married James Howard Turner on December 22, 1953
and he preceded her in death on May 25, 1993.
Survivors include three daughters, Mary Ann Turner of Arkansas, Connie S. Otter
and husband Ray of Versailles, Betty Jean Curran; one daughter-in-law and caregiver,
Janet Turner of North Vernon; eight grandchildren; several great-grandchildren;
and one sister, Ruth Creech of Greensburg; and several other relatives. She was
preceded in death by one daughter, Linda Kay Turner; one son, Larry Wayne Turner;
and one granddaughter, Jeanne Nicole Curran.
Mrs. Turner was a homemaker.

Elmer B. "Pete" Heppner, 78, of Oldenburg, died Sunday, February
6, 2005 at Margaret Mary Community Hospital, Batesville. He was born January
1,
1927 in Franklin County the son of Jacob Heppner and Jennie O'Connor Heppner,
both deceased. He married Jackie Huber Heppner on August 12, 1952 at the Holy
Name Church in Cincinnati and she preceded him in death on June 27, 1981. He
later married Sharron Corey Heppner on December 27, 1984 at the Holy Family Church.
Survivors include three daughters, Mary Jane Johnson of Manchester, Mickie Rader
of Vevay, Suprena McAtee of Aurora; one son, Tony Heppner of Milan; two sisters,
Emma Ryan of Cincinnati, Rita Batta of Lawrenceville; 14 grandchildren; 11 great
grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by three
sisters, Leona Burbank, Roumilda Loaring, Freda Cronin; and two brothers, Lawrence
Heppner, Lambert Heppner.
Mr. Heppner was a construction worker for Bruns-Gutzwiller retiring after 32
years of service. He was a member of the Holy Family Church, Oldenburg.

Frank E. Fairchild, 86, of Batesville, formerly of Aurora and Leesburg, Florida,
died Thursday, February 3, 2005 at Hospitality Hall, Batesville. He was born
July 3, 1918 in South Bend the son of Earl Fairchild and Catherine Fairchild,
both deceased. He married Rosella (Fritz) Fairchild on August 12, 1939 at South
Bend and she survives.
Other survivors include three sons, Ken Fairchild of Batesville, Don Fairchild
of Portland, Oregon, Tom Fairchild of Indianapolis; five grandchildren; and one
great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by one brother, Robert Curl.
Mr. Fairchild was an operating engineer for American Electric Power in Lawrenceburg
before retiring after 40 years of service. He was a member of the Prell-Bland
American Legion Post #271 in Batesville, Knights of Columbus and Leesburg VFW
in Leesburg, Florida. He was also a member of the St. Louis Church, Batesville.

Julia E. Carr, 91, of Osgood, died Monday, January 31, 2005 at The Waters of
Batesville. She was born February 17, 1913 the daughter of Andy Cook and Julia
Radiersik Cook both deceased. She married Joseph Carr and he preceded her in
death.
Survivors include two nephews, Phillip Speier of Columbus, Indiana, and Tom Cooke
of Columbus, Ohio. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Tressa Resler, Jessie
Sternagel; and one brother, Stephen Cooke.

Julia M. Heaney
Julia M. Heaney, 90, of Batesville, formerly of Indianapolis, passed away February
3, 2005 at her residence. She was born March 27, 1914 in San Francisco, California
the daughter of Thomas and Julia Reidy, of Kerry County, Ireland, both deceased.
She lived with her adoptive parents, Michael and Mary Hackett. She married
James E. Heaney and he preceded her in death in 1969.
Survivors include two sons, William M. (Evelyn) Payne and James M. (Sue) Heaney;
seven grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; four great-great grandchildren;
and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by one daughter, Wanda
Payne as an infant; and three brothers, William, Jerome and Thomas Reidy.
Mrs. Heaney worked as an apartment manager for many years. She later served as
a volunteer with St. Vincent de Paul Society in Indianapolis. She was a member
of the St. Louis Catholic Church in Batesville.
Catholic mass was held Monday, February 7 at 11 a.m. at the St. Louis Catholic
Church in Batesville. Burial was in the Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery in Indianapolis.

Paul Douglas "Bubba" Watts, 54, of Dillsboro, died Thursday, February
3, 2005 at the VA Medical Center, Cincinnati. He was born July 2, 1950 in Cincinnati
the son of Pollard Paul Watts and Susan Strong.
Survivors include his mother, Susan (Strong) Watts of Dillsboro; sister, Cynthia
Sue (Watts) Ryan of Aurora; and one brother, Michael Allen Watts of Dayton, Ohio.
His father, Pollard Paul Watts, preceded him in death.
Mr. Watts was a sign painter. He was a 1967 graduate of Taylor High School, served
in the Vietnam War, US Army Airborne Division, was a member of the Northcutt
Laaker American Legion Post #292, and a member of the VFW Post #5396.

Raymond Lee Horne, 70, of Osgood, formerly of Cincinnati, died Friday, February
4, 2005 at his residence. He was born September 23, 1934 in Cincinnati.

of Sunman; two brothers, Richard and Kenneth Horne both of Cincinnati; and two
grandchildren.

veteran; and was a truck driver most of his life driving for Mapleknoll/Life

Tommy Davies, 66, of Farmers Retreat passed away Thursday, February 3, 2005 at
his residence. He was born on Davies Hill in Clay Township, Dearborn County
on December 4, 1938 the son of Franklin and Anna Jacobs Davies. He was married
to Frances Randall on September 17, 1960 and she survives.
Other survivors include one daughter, Tina Devers and husband Chuck of Fairland;
three sons, Michael Davies and wife Amy of Dewberry, Patrick Davies and Heidi
of Rising Sun, and Franklin Davies and friend Marie Meyer of Cross Plains; ten
grandchildren; one sister, Dorothy Snyder of Cincinnati; sisters-in-law, Helen
Davies of Olean, Betty Davies of Dillsboro, and Ellen Ann Carroll of Ross, Ohio;
and brother-in-law, John Rodolo of Madison. He was preceded in death by his parents;

Mr. Davies was retired from Monsanto and was a Navy veteran.

the daughter of Floy White Dillingham, deceased. She married Edward L. Skirvin,
Sr. on April 5, 1970 and he survives.

Carol Jean Byrd all of Indianapolis; one son, Thomas Lee Barnes of Florida; three
stepdaughters, Linda Anast-May of Chicago, Brenda Rickett of Mooresville, Sandy
Taylor of Avon; two stepsons, Edward Skirvin, Jr., of Greenwood, Allen Dean Skirvin
of Indianapolis; 13 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren, step-grandchildren,

Mrs. Skirvin was a 1934 graduate of Washington High School. She was a member

William M. Rogers
William M. Rogers, 79, of Batesville, died Saturday, February 5, 2005 at Christ
Hospital, Cincinnati. He was born April 25, 1925 in Decatur County, Indiana
the son of Ethel Cain Patterson and Van Patterson, both deceased. He married
Betty Ann Dwenger Rogers on October 30, 1971 at St. Anne's Church in Hamburg.
Survivors include by eight brothers-in-law, nine sisters-in-law, 46 nieces and
nephews and 41 great nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two brothers-in-law.
Mr. Rogers was a factory worker for Union Furniture Company and later Batesville
Casket Company before retiring in 1991. He was a member of the Eagles Aerie #1130
and the American Bowling Congress.

on October 6, 1996.
Survivors include one son, Jason Jones of Carmel; eight daughters, Elaine Sensenig
of Greensburg, Kitty Busteed of Versailles, Una Engel of Charlotte, NC, Geneva
Langdon of Marietta, GA, Janette Bramell of West Chester, OH, Jeanie Ballard
of Carmel, Christine Polesan of Gainesville, VA, Sue Ann Goffe of Centerville,
OH; three brothers; four sisters; nineteen grandchildren; and twenty-three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one son, Randall Jones; one daughter, Louvella Jewell;

Carl E. Zimmerman, 90, of Boynton Beach, FL, formerly of Dearborn County died
Wednesday, January 26, 2005 at Arbor Oaks in Lake Worth, FL. He was born September
19, 1914 in Lawrenceburg the son of Edward and Emma Hever Zimmerman, both deceased.
He married Jane Stephens and she survives.

Taitt of Alexandria Bay, NY; two sons, Dale Zimmerman of Atlantis, FL, Glen Zimmerman
of Stevensville, MI; four sisters, Laura Mang of Batesville, Anna Sweeny of Lawrenceburg,
Eileen Zimmerman of Lawrenceburg, Evelyn Beneker of Brookville; three brothers,
Ralph Zimmerman of Sunman, Rev. Earl Zimmerman of Rothschild, WI, Edward Zimmerman
of Cincinnati, OH; ten grandchildren and step grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one sister, Mabel Beneker.
Mr. Zimmerman was a former teacher in the public school system for South Bend
and served in several elected city offices including Mayor in Boynton Beach.
He was also a US Army veteran serving in World War II and was a member of the
American Legion in Boynton Beach.

in Sunman and also after 10 a.m. at St. John's Lutheran Church on Thursday, February
3.

Faye Eichenlaub, 71, of Versailles, died Saturday, January 29, 2005 at Margaret
Mary Community Hospital, Batesville. She was born July 18, 1933 in Cincinnati,
the daughter of George Panich and Norma Brunner. She married Earl Eichenlaub
on May 8, 1954 in Cincinnati and he survives.
Other survivors include one son, Gary Eichenlaub and wife Holly of Milan; two
grandchildren, Kyle and Lexi Eichenlaub of Milan; two sisters, Lucy Roemer (Tom)
of Las Vegas, NV, Dorothy Amos (Bud Lips) of Ft. Walton Beach, FL; one brother-in-law,
Robert Eichenlaub of Cincinnati; three sisters-in-law, Ruth Walterman of Springfield
Township, OH, May Eichenlaub of Boston, Mass, Evelyn Boehnlein Klosterman; and
many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother,
Frank Boehnlein; one brother-in-law, Edward Eichenlaub; and one daughter, Paula
Eichenlaub.
Mrs. Eichenlaub was a homemaker, a graduate of Western Hills High School and

James Alan Mahoney
James Alan Mahoney, 50, of Columbus, died Friday, January 28, 2005 at Columbus
Regional Hospital. He was born April 7, 1954 in Milan the son of Loyd George
Mahoney and Naomi Roberta Rice.
Survivors include his mother, Naomia Rice of Columbus and several friends. He
was preceded in death by his father, Loyd Mahoney.
Mr. Mahoney was a custodian at East Columbus Christian Church. He attended Clifty
Elementary School, was a 1972 graduate of Columbus High School and attended Ivy
Tech and IUPUC. He was also a former owner of Cummins Book Store and a member
of the Elks Club.

Joy Lynn Poling, 41, of Madison, died Wednesday, January 26, 2005 at King's
Daughters' Hospital in Madison. She was born May 31, 1963 in Escondido,
CA the daughter
of William W. "Bill" Poling and Opal Marilyn "Kitty" (Burch)
Poling and they survive in Madison.
Other survivors include three sisters, Cathy Shaffer of Madison, Carolyn Crum
and husband Richard of Louisville, KY, Sheila Thompson of Madison; one half brother,
Ronnie Lee Poling and wife Helen of Michigan City; three nieces; three nephews;
one great-niece; and several aunts, uncles, great aunts, great uncles, cousins
and other relatives. She was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents,
William and Ludie Burch and her paternal grandparents, Roy and Naomi Bliton Poling.
Mrs. Poling was a graduate of Madison Diagnostic Training Center, working there
until she was 21. She was also a member of the Carpenters Home Church in Lakeland,
FL and attended the First Assembly of God Church in Madison.

Kathleen Marie Schrader
Kathleen Marie Schrader, 66, of Batesville, died Friday, January 28, 2005 at
her residence. She was born November 26, 1938 in Yorkville, IL the daughter
of Gerald and Mathilda (Steffen) Pearce. She married Eugene M. Schrader on
September 3, 1960 at Adams Lutheran Church and he survives.
Other survivors include two sons, Steven (Christine) Schrader of Loveland, OH,
SPC David Schrader of US Army in Iraq; three daughters, Donna (Donald) Steiss
of Richardson, TX, Debbie Schrader and Diane Eldridge both of Batesville; six
grandchildren; and one brother, James Pearce of Sandwich, IL. One sister, Elnora
Burks preceded him in death.
Mrs. Schrader was a licensed cosmetologist and ran a daycare in her home for
many years. She was a 44-year member of the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary,
Unite 271, life member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary, Unite 3183 and a 1956 graduate
of Yorkville High School. She was also a member of the Adams Lutheran Church,
Batesville.

Larry D. Neel Leap and Gloria (Taylor) Leap.
Survivors include two daughters, Jessica Marie Leap and Megan Joy Leap, both
of Hanover; his mother, Gloria Taylor Leap of Batavia, OH; two sisters, Jennifer
Sproles and husband Ernie of Madison, Cassie C. Baker and husband Shane of Madison;
his grandmothers, Estene Cole Leap of Vevay, Mary Taylor of Hanover; his cousin
and caregiver, Dale Dixon, Jr. and wife Cheryl of Vevay; nephews and nieces;
and several aunts, uncles, cousins and other relatives. He was preceded in death
by his father, Larry D. Neel Leap and his grandfathers, Joseph E. Leap and William
Taylor.
Mr. Leap was a 1985 graduate of Switzerland County High School. He was a self-employed
carpenter for many years and a member of the Rivervalley Community Church in
Madison.

Cincinnati. He was born February 9, 1058 in Detroit, Michigan the son of Ernst
and Martha Dugan Held. He married Lisa Engel on August 15, 1981 in Cincinnati
and she survives.
Other survivors include one daughter, Sierra Held at home; two sons, Michael
Held of Aurora and Daniel Held at home; and one brother, Bud Held of Cincinnati.
His parents preceded him in death.
Mr. Held was employed at Qualis Automotive in Hebron, Kentucky. He was a member
of the First Southern Baptist Church, Sunman.
Visitation will be held Wednesday, February 2, after 4 p.m. at the First Southern
Baptist Church, Sunman. Funeral services will be held Thursday, February 3, 10
a.m. at the church with Pastor Hobert Brandenburg officiating. Burial will be
in the Arlington Memorial Gardens, Cincinnati.
Memorials may be made to the Cancer Society.

Mildred A. Taul
Mildred A. Taul, 71, of Tattnall County, formerly of Milan, died Wednesday, January
26, 2005 at her residence. She married Leroy Taul and he preceded her in death.
Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Carol and Mike Dixon of Batesville;
three sons and daughters-in-law, Terry and Mary Taul of Augusta, Tommy and Darlene
Taul of Pekin, IL, Don and Kristie Taul of St. Marks, FL; one sister and brother-in-law,
Louise Anderson and James Brantley of Vidalia; one brother and sister-in-law,
Cecil and Sug Anderson of Glennville; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one grandson, Corey Dixon.
Mrs. Taul was a homemaker and also a member of the Stoney Hill Freewill Baptist
Church.
Funeral services were held Sunday, January 30, 2 p.m. at Stoney Hill Freewill
Baptist Church with Rev. Harris Nix officiating.
Burial was in the church cemetery. Memorials may go to the Pearls of Life Hospice
in Claxton, GA or Stoney Hill Freewill Baptist Church.

Monita Merida
Monita Merida, 79, of Sunman, died Tuesday, January 25, 2005 at Christ Hospital
in Cincinnati, OH. She was born October 8, 1925 in Barboursville, KY the daughter
of Gilbert and Eliza Messer Jordan, both deceased. She married Ike Merida Sr.
on April 1, 1941 in Barboursville and he preceded her in death on May 22, 1985.
Survivors include four daughter, Shirley Branstetter of Batesville, Barbara Broughton
of Cincinnati, OH, Drucilla Miller of Osgood, Patricia Bischoff of Batesville;
four sons, Ronnie Merida of Sunman, Wayne Merida of Greensburg, Ray Merida of
Milan, Ike Merida of Moores Hill; two sisters, Hazel Trent and Edmonia Fischtinger
both of Detroit, MI; ten grandsons; one granddaughter; three step-grandsons;
nine great-grandchildren; and three step-great-grandchildren. She was preceded
in death by two sisters and six brothers.
Mrs. Merida was a homemaker. She was also a member of the Freewill Baptist Church
at Negangard's Corner.
Funeral services were held Friday, January 28, 11 a.m. at Cook Funeral Home in
Sunman with Pastor Tom Holt officiating.
Burial was in the Craven Cemetery in Milan. Memorials may go to the American
Heart Association.
Nannie Marie Maybrier
Nannie Marie Maybrier, 83, of Versailles, formerly of Milan, died Saturday, January
29, 2005 in Versailles. She was born December 22, 1921 in Russell Springs,
KY the daughter of Leo and Lettie (Robinson) Miller, both deceased. She married
Edward R. Maybrier on June 20, 1936 and he preceded her in death on April 2,
2001. She was a homemaker.
Survivors include one son, Harold R. Maybrier of Milan; one daughter, Geraldine
Marie Beach of Milan; eight grandchildren; and thirteen great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one son, Robert Gene Maybrier and two grandchildren.
Visitation will be held today, Tuesday, February 1, 6-8 p.m. at Sibbett-Moore
Funeral Home in Moores Hill.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, February 2, 11 a.m. at the funeral home
with Rev. George Savage officiating.
Burial will be in the Craven Cemetery in Milan. Memorials may go to the Ripley
County Cancer Fund.
Thurmen C. Roberts
Thurmen C. Roberts, 95, of Vevay, died Sunday, January 30, 2005 at King's Daughters'
Hospital in Madison. He was born November 3, 1909 in Switzerland County the
son of Sterling Hilbert Roberts and Ella (Roberts) Roberts, both deceased.
Survivors include several nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews and other
relatives. He was preceded in death by four half brothers, Ernest, Earl, Glen
and Clarence Roberts and one half sister, Katie Romans.
Mr. Roberts was a 1929 graduate of Vevay High School. He was a member of the
Vevay Church of Christ later attending the Ebenezer Wesleyan Holiness Church
near Moorefield. He was inducted into the U.S. Army on January 28, 1941 in Louisville,
KY going to basic training at Ft. Knox, KY. He served in World War II until he
was honorably discharged in 1945. He was a life member of the Vevay Veterans
of Foreign Wars Post 5396. He worked for 30 years as a newspaper carrier for
the Louisville Courier Journal and Cincinnati Enquirer. He also owned and operated
the Vevay Grill for eight years. He later wrote a book about his World War II
experiences.
Funeral services will be held today, Tuesday, February 1, 11 a.m. at Haskell & Morrison
Funeral Home in Vevay with Rev. Ronald Sandidge and Rev. David Dicken officiating.
Burial will be in the Vevay Cemetery. Memorials may go to the Ebenezer Wesleyan
Holiness Church.
