William E. Adams, Sr.
William E. Adams, Sr., 87, of Versailles, died Saturday, May 22, 2004 at his
residence. He was born May 17, 1917 in Madison the son of E. Harrison Adams
and Della Hankins, both deceased. He married Naomi (Perkins) Adams and she
preceded him in death on November 2, 2001.
Survivors include five daughters, Ruth Hyatt and husband Dale of Osgood, Patricia
Oney and husband Emmett of Versailles, Linda Pickett and husband Mitch of Hope,
Sherry McNamer and husband Dan of Madison, Cynthia Brunner and husband Chris
of Versailles, two sons, William E. Adams, Jr. of Versailles, Robert L. Adams
of Versailles, one brother, Corbie Adams of Columbus, fourteen grandchildren,
nine great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death
by one daughter, Vicki Adams, one granddaughter, Shannon Begley and four sisters,
Doris Cozad, Marie Gordnier, Sadie Adams and Alice Mae Adams.
Mr. Adams was a farmer and a member of the New Marion Baptist Church.
Visitation will be held today, Tuesday, May 25, 9-11 a.m. at Bovard-Holt-Furst
Funeral Home in Versailles.
Funeral services will follow visitation at the funeral home at 11 a.m. with Brother
Dale Day officiating.
Burial will be in the Grandview Memorial Gardens. Memorials may go to the Margaret
Mary Hospice.
Martha J. Dirkhising
Martha J. Dirkhising, 96, of St. Mary's, died Thursday, May 20, 2004 at her residence.
She was born October 26, 1907 near Brookville the daughter of Thomas and Dorothy
Ertel Buckler, both deceased. She married Raymond J. Dirkhising and he preceded
her in death on March 16, 1977.
Survivors include four daughters, Dorothy Smith and Martha Harnishfager, both
of Brookville, Ida Miller of Batesville, Patricia Berg of Jaynesville, WI, two
sons, Daniel Dirkhising of Lawrenceburg, Raymond L. Dirkhising of Brookville,
two brothers, Paul Buckler of Richmond, Tom Buckler of Lakeland, FL, thirty-one
grandchildren, fifty-seven great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two sons, Dennis and Eugene Dirkhising, six brothers,
Robert, Lawrence, Jerome, Ed and Arnold Buckler and also Francis Buckler who
passed away on Thursday, May 20, two grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
Mrs. Dirkhising was a homemaker and a member of St. Mary's of the Rock Church
and Franklin County Right to Life. She was also active in several organizations
that benefited handicapped citizens.
Visitation will be held today, Tuesday, May 25, 9:30 to 11 a.m. (slow time) at
St. Mary's of the Rock Church in Batesville.
Funeral mass will follow visitation at the church at 11 a.m. Burial will be in
the St. Mary's Cemetery.
Memorials may go to the Franklin County Right to Life or Association of Retarded

Ralston O'Neal
Agnes Taylor Ralston O'Neal, 98, of Madison, died Wednesday, May 12, 2004 at
Scott Memorial Hospital in Scottsburg. She was born July 7, 1905 in Jefferson
County the daughter of James Edward Ralston and Flora Taylor, both deceased.
She married Floyd (Pete) O'Neal and he preceded her in death on May 18, 1981.
Survivors include three daughters, Martha Ann Heitz of Madison, Joy McDole and
husband Bob of Madison, Janet Brawner and husband Paul Joe of Lexington, three
son, James (Ed) O'Neal and wife Jo of West Lafayette, Carrol E. (Pete) O'Neal
of Madison, Gary O'Neal and wife Sue of Madison, two sisters-in-law, Gracie O'Neal
of Cross Plains, Theo Ralston of Madison, nineteen grandchildren, fifty-two great-grandchildren,
twelve great-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded
in death by one sister, Laura Jean Konkle, two brothers, David Thomas Ralston
and Graham Ralston, one granddaughter, Patricia Ann Andrews, one great-granddaughter,
Ashley Elizabeth Sinders, one son-in-law, Wallace Heitz, one daughter-in-law,
Helen O'Neal and one grandson-in-law, Humberto Fernandez.
Mrs. O'Neal was a homemaker and in her early years taught school in a one room
school near Canaan. In 1925 she obtained her teaching degree from Hanover College.
She was a member of the Indian-Kentuck Baptist Church where she served as a Sunday
school teacher and she was also a member of the Evelyn Drayer Circle of the Church.
Funeral services were held Saturday, May 15, 1 p.m. at Indian-Kentuck Baptist
Church with Rev. Ed Roberts officiating.
Burial was in the Grandview Memorial Gardens. Memorials may go to the Indian-Kentuck
Baptist or Caledonia Presbyterian Church.

Benjamin
S. Stephenson
Benjamin S. Stephenson, 92, of Elrod, passed away Thursday, May 13, 2004 at the
King's Daughters' Hospital in Madison. He was born on July 1, 1911 near Chatham
in Washington County, Alabama the son of Peter and Eva Mellon Stephenson. He
was married to Elaine Kindle on January 1, 1940 and she survives.
Other survivors include two sons, Larry Stephenson of Elrod, Ronald Stephenson
and wife Pam of Kent, one daughter, Glenda Kelly and husband Robert of Scipio
and two grandchildren, Brian Kelly and Brianna Stephenson. He was preceded in
death by his parents, seven sisters and four brothers.
Mr. Stephenson was a 33 year employee of Schenleys in Lawrenceburg retiring in
1974. He had also worked on a government light tender boat on the Ohio and Tennessee
Rivers.
Funeral services were held Saturday, May 15, 2 p.m. at the Stratton-Karsteter
Funeral Home in Versailles with Rev. Bruce Fitzsimmons of the Washington Baptist
Church officiating.
Burial was in the Eastview Cemetery in Patriot. Memorials may be given to the
Washington Baptist Church Building Fund.
Charles H. Roepke
Charles H. Roepke, 77, of Sunman, died Saturday, May 15, 2004 at Hospitality
Hall in Batesville. He was born March 4, 1927 in Princeton the son of Charles
L. and May Merrick Roepke, both deceased. He married Betty Huber on October
6, 1951 at the Sunman Community Church and she survives.
Other survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Duane and Rheeta-Lou Roepke
of Lawrenceville, Mark and Nancy Roepke of Penntown, one brother, Glenn Roepke
of Sunman, ten grandchildren and one great-grandchild. He was preceded in death
by one son, Eldon E. Roepke.
Mr. Roepke was a farmer and retired from Fisher Body after 30 years of employment
as an electrician, developer and manager of the Quality Storage Units near Morris.
He was a US Army veteran serving from 1945 to 1947. He was also a member of the
Sunman Bible Church, the Ripley County Historical Society and the Kenneth L.
Diver Post #337 American Legion in Sunman.
Funeral services will be held today, Tuesday, May 18, 10:30 a.m. (slow time)
at Sunman Bible Church with Sterling L. Cauble, DD officiating.
Burial will be in the St. Paul Cemetery in Sunman with military honors conducted
by the Kenneth L. Diver Post #337 American Legion in Sunman.

Estell Kenens
Della Grace Estell Kenens, 89, of Anderson, died Friday, May 14, 2004 at Rawlins
House in Pendleton. She was born March 23, 1915 in Ripley County the daughter
of Russell and Anna (Perkins) Estell, both deceased. She married Walter D. Kenens
and he preceded her in death in 1988.
Survivors include one sister, Shirley Asche of Greensburg, one brother, Joseph
Estell of Holton, several nieces and nephews including Larry and Millie Asche
of Anderson and special friend, Essie Hoisie of Anderson. She was preceded in
death by her siblings, Edwin Estell, William Estell and Gerald Ray Estell.
Mrs. Kenens retired in 1977 from Delco Remy - Assembly Plant 10 after 30 years
of service. She was a member of South Meridian Church of God, UAW #662, Killbuck
Retirees and the Rise and Shine Group at the church.
Visitation will be held today, Tuesday, May 18, 11:30 a.m. at Robert D. Loose
Funeral Home - South Chapel in Anderson.
Funeral services will follow visitation at the funeral home at 11:30 a.m. with
Rev. Dale Landis officiating.

Dr. William F. Glover
Dr. William F. Glover passed away Friday, May 14, 2004 at Ripley Crossing in
Milan. He was born October 1, 1916 in Lawrenceburg the son of William G. and
Clara (Smith) Glover. He married Alice R. (Drown) Glover on June 7, 1946 and
she preceded him in death on May 29, 1998.
Survivors include two sons, Arthur (Debbie) Glover of Tempe, Arizona, Fred (Sharon)
Glover of Milan, two daughters, Angie (Keith) Olds of Melbourne, FL, Edith (David)
Fork of Mukwonago, WI, nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Dr. William F. Glover was a longtime local veterinarian who worked on his uncle's
farm in Hancock County and the Milan Furniture Factory to raise money to go to
veterinary school. He left Ohio State University to serve during WWII in the
Army Air Force. He was shot down and captured over Schwinfort, Germany and was
held captive for 20 months before his release. He received the Purple Heart and
the American Defense Service Medal along with many other honors. He was a member
of the American Ex-POW's and a member of the Catapillar Club (a club of POW's).
Dr. Glover, who graduated from Milan High School in 1934, later received the
Distinguished Alumni Award from that school in 1995 for his many accomplishments.
He served on the Milan School Board for many years, was a member of the Milan
United Methodist Church, was supervisor and advisor for the Soil Conservation
District, was a life member of the Milan American Legion and Milan VFW Posts,
a 50+ year member of the Indiana Farm Bureau, an active 4-H leader for years,
was a director of the Ripley County Historical Society, Pleasant Hill Cemetery,
a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association and the Indiana Veterinary
Medical Association along with operating the family farm for years.
Visitation will be held Wednesday, May 19, 6-9 p.m. at Laws-Carr-Moore Funeral
Home in Milan.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, May 20, 10 a.m. at the Milan United Methodist
Church with Rev. Beverly Smith and Rev. Robbin Norris officiating.
Burial will follow in the Forest Hill Cemetery in Moores Hill. Memorial contributions
may be made to the Milan Scholarship Foundation, Ripley County Historical Society
or the Milan Volunteer Fire Department.
Ella F. Oley
Ella Frances Oley, 79, of Lafayette, died Friday, May 14, 2004 at St. Elizabeth
Hospital. She was born in Bullsgap, TN on February 25, 1925. She married William
F. Oley in July of 1968 in Bloomington and he survives.
Mrs. Oley worked in housekeeping for five years at the Indiana Veterans Home
and had previously worked at Sears for 20 years where she was a price marker.
She was of Protestant faith and was a member of the VFW Lodge in Lafayette.
She is survived by one son, Roy Earl Thomas and wife Delia of Versailles, one
brother, Arnold L. Quinton and wife JoAnn, six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Bert and Myrtle, one brother, Alvin
Quinton and one grandson, Wesley Earl Thomas.
Services will be held today, Tuesday, May 18, 2 p.m. at Hippensteel Funeral Home
with Rev. Dr. Clayton Kendall officiating. Friends may call one hour prior to
services. Memorials may go to the Alzheimer's Association.
George D. Johns
George D. Johns, 82, of Vevay, died Sunday, May 16, 2004 at King's Daughters'
Hospital in Madison. He was born December 23, 1921 in Patriot the son of Brack
Johns and Rose (Webster) Johns, both deceased. He married Ethel McKinley on
October 18, 1943 and she survives.
Other survivors include one daughter, Brenda Kay Rayles and husband Donald
Gene of Vevay, three sons, Michael Ray Johns of Warsaw, KY, David Wayne Johns
of Flemingsburg,
KY, Steven Allen Johns and wife Tammy of Aurora, four brothers, Arlen Johns of
Vevay, Cecil Johns of Sellersburg, Bobby Johns of Grand Haven, MI, Virgil Johns
of Charlestown, two sisters, Ruth Martin of Rising Sun, Mildred Shaffer of Madison,
seven grandchildren, one great-granddaughter and several nieces, nephews and
other relatives. He was preceded in death by one son, George Robert "Bobby" Johns,
three brothers, Elmer, Carroll and Calvin Johns and three sisters, Mary Smithers,
Jenny Mae Collar and Alleine Johns.
Mr. Johns attended Patriot Schools and was inducted into the United States Air
Force in 1943 rising to the rank of Sergeant during World War II. He was honorably
discharged in November of 1946. He was a farmer and had farmed on Tapp's Ridge
in Switzerland County for 40 years. He was employed with Jefferson Proving Ground
in Madison from 1966 to 1982 as a test resource clerk. He also worked in the
Commodity Office in Cincinnati, OH and the Indiana Department of Agriculture
in Indianapolis from 1956 to 1962. He attended several technical schools for
two years. He was a member of the Fredonia Baptist Church where he served as
trustee, deacon and Sunday school teacher for 30 years. He was also a member
of the Vevay American Legion Post #185.
Visitation will be held Wednesday, May 19, 10 a.m. (slow time) until time of
services at Haskell & Morrison Funeral Home in Vevay.
Funeral services will follow visitation at the funeral home at 1 p.m. (slow time)
with Rev. William Barnhill and Rev. Charles Bill McKinley officiating.
Burial will be in the Vevay Cemetery with full military rites conducted by the
Vevay American Legion and VFW. Memorials may go to the Fredonia Baptist Church

Howard Joseph Miller
Howard Joseph Miller, 82, of Osgood, died Saturday, May 15, 2004 at Margaret
Mary Community Hospital in Batesville. He was born August 29, 1921 in Shelby
Township the son of Clarence and Barbara (Kieffer) Miller. He attended grade
school at St. Magdalene and graduated from New Marion High School in 1940.
He entered the United States Navy in July of 1943 and served on a mine sweeper
in the Pacific Theater. He was wounded when his boat was bombed off the coast
of Saipan and received a Purple Heart for his shrapnel injury.
He married Virginia Rose Stork in 1952 and she survives. Other survivors include
one daughter, Ellen K. Davis and husband William of Greendale, one daughter-in-law,
Tina Miller Lynch and husband John of Osgood and two grandsons, Kurt Miller and
Sean Lynch. He was preceded in death by one son, Michael Joseph Miller, his parents,
Clarence and Barbara Miller, one sister, Joan Miller and two brothers, Floyd
Miller and Dennis Miller.
Mr. Miller was a farmer and drove a Farm Bureau Co-op petroleum tank truck for
twenty years. He was then employed by the United States Postal Service at Osgood
as a rural letter carrier for twenty years. He raised and showed registered Polled
Hereford cattle on the state and national level for many years. He and his family
were inducted into the Indiana Polled Hereford Association Hall of Fame in 1998.
He also raised and trained Australian Shepherd cattle dogs. He was a member of
the St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, the Napoleon Veterans of Foreign Wars
and the Osgood American Legion.
Visitation will be held today, Tuesday, May 18, 4-8 p.m. at Neal's Funeral Home
in Osgood with rosary services being held at 7:30 p.m.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held Wednesday, May 19 at 10 a.m. at St. John
the Baptist Church in Osgood with Father Darvin officiating.
Military graveside services will be in the Greendale Cemetery in Osgood. Memorials

Opal Ward Carroll
Opal Ward Carroll, 96, of Osgood, died Friday, May 14, 2004 at Manderley Health
Care Center in Osgood. She was born February 19, 1908 in Randolph County the
daughter of Samuel and Nancy Fisher Ward, both deceased. She married Virgil
Carroll on November 23, 1949 at Dupoint and he preceded her in death on November
28, 1902.
Survivors include two sisters-in-law, Esther Agatha Carroll of Indianapolis,
Mary Elizabeth Self of Indianapolis, eleven nieces and one nephew. She was preceded
in death by one sister, Agnes Lee Grinstead.
Visitation will be held today, Tuesday, May 18, 1:30 to 2 p.m. at Hopewell Baptist
Church in Holton.
Funeral services will follow visitation at 2 p.m. Burial will be in the church
cemetery.

Philip E. French
Philip E. French, 68, of Osgood, died Friday, May 14, 2004 at UC Hospital in
Cincinnati, OH. He was born May 21, 1935 in Cincinnati, OH the son of Wm. M.
and Martha Schoenling French, both deceased. He married Lois Anne Mink on May
30, 1967 in Osgood and she survives at home.
Other survivors include two sons, Jeffrey Philip French of Versailles, Christopher
Matthew French of Osgood, two brothers, William M. French II of Osgood, Steve
H. French of Osgood and four sisters, Carolyn Johnson of Mississippi, Martha
Johnson of Illinois, Janice Peters of Ohio and Gail Jones of Wisconsin. He was
preceded in death by one brother, Tommy French.
Mr. French was a retired employee of Joseph E. Seagram having worked 40 years
and was also an Army veteran. He was a member of the Osgood United Methodist
Church, Osgood Masonic Lodge, Osgood Lions Club, Gideons International of Ripley
County and the Wm. A. Gilland American Legion Post #267. He was also the Republican
precinct committeeman for Center Township of Ripley County for many years and
was the trustee for Center Township in Ripley County for 20 years.
Visitation will be held today, Tuesday, May 18, 10-11 a.m. at the Osgood United
Methodist Church.
Funeral services will follow visitation at the church at 11 a.m. Private burial
services will be held at a later date.
Memorials may go to the Osgood United Methodist Church or the American Diabetes

Howard W. Stainbrook
Howard W. Stainbrook, 87, of Butlerville, died Saturday, May 8, 2004 in Jennings
County. He was born September 12, 1916 in Morgan County the son of Elmer and
Amelia Olive (Wright) Stainbrook, both deceased. He married Norma Susan Perry
in Shelbyville on July 11, 1944 and she preceded him in death on October 29,
1998. He then married Irene May Homan in Butlerville on May 12, 2001 and she
survives.
Other survivors include three sons, David Stainbrook of Austin, Daniel Stainbrook
of Westport, Philip Stainbrook of North Vernon, one stepson, Gary Homan of Madison,
TN, three daughters, Naomi Catt of Shelbyville, Ruth Shawhan of Mooresville,
Lois Stainbrook of Butlerville, two stepdaughters, Beverly Freeman of Salida,
CO, Fonda Wheeler of Madison, TN, one granddaughter, Charity Clarkson of North
Vernon, one sister, Naomi Gambrel of Crothersville, one brother, Paul Stainbrook
of Florida, fourteen grandchildren, three step grandchildren, nineteen great-grandchildren
and three step great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one son, Samuel
John Stainbrook, one sister, Edith Weber, one brother, Thurman Stainbrook and
one granddaughter, Delana Jill Stainbrook.
Mr. Stainbrook retired from GE in Shelbyville in 1978 after 17 years of service.
He was also a farmer and attended the Rodney Wesleyan Church. He was a veteran
of WWII having served with the US Army.
Visitation will be held Wednesday, May 12, 4-8 p.m. at Bass & Gasper Funeral
Home in Westport.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, May 13, 11 a.m. at the funeral home with
Rev. Michael Miller officiating.

James V. Philpot
James V. Philpot, 60, of Metamora, died Sunday, May 9, 2004 at his residence.
He was born January 18, 1944 in Cincinnati, OH the son of James C. and EmmaLee
Grow Philpot, both deceased. He married Shelia A. Johnson in Lawrenceburg on
November 26, 1965 and she survives.
Other survivors include two daughters, Jamie Crawley of Milan, Beth Richey of
Moores Hill, two sons, Joshua and Adam Philpot, both at home and two grandchildren,
Logan and Brianna Crawley.
Mr. Philpot retired from the Cincinnati Enquirer after over 30 years of employment.
He was a Navy veteran of the Vietnam War serving on a Destroyer that was an escort
ship for the USS Enterprise.

Ruth Carol Riley
Ruth Carol Riley, 57, of Kankakee, IL, died Friday, May 7, 2004 in Illinois.
She was born December 1, 1946 in Cincinnati, OH the daughter of Fred and Agnes
Weber Nanney, both deceased. She married Ed Riley and he survives. She was
a homemaker.
Other survivors include four sisters, Alma Bingham of Elrod, Mary Mitchell of
Lawrenceburg, Dona Nanney of Colorado Springs, CO, Elsie Diaz of Nebraska and

Shirley A. Cook
Shirley A. Cook, 58, of Elrod, passed away Thursday, May 6, 2004 at her residence.
She was born in Cincinnati on November 28, 1945 the daughter of Clyde and Melissa
Lawson Cole. She was married to Dan Cook on December 23, 1992 and he survives.
Other survivors include two stepsons, Jason Cook and Tom Cook, both of Cincinnati,
one stepdaughter, Christy Waffle of Hamilton, three grandchildren, Michael Cook,
Britney and Codi Waffle, one stepsister, Donna Hercamp and one stepbrother, Jerry
Hercamp. She was preceded in death by her brother, Charles Cole and her sister,
JoAnn Adkins.
Mrs. Cook was a 25-year employee of Frischs of Lawrenceburg and was a member
of the Washington Baptist Church.
Funeral services were held Monday, May 10, 12 p.m. at the Washington Baptist
Church with Rev. Bruce Fitzsimmons and Bro. Gary Ring officiating.

Alice B. Jewell
Alice B. Jewell, 91, of Vevay, died Saturday, May 1, 2004 at her residence. She
was born March 8, 1913 in Jefferson County the daughter of John A. Woodfill
and Ada E. Demaree, both deceased. She married Boone Jewell and he preceded
her in death on April 5, 1981.
Survivors include two daughters, Mary A. Simmons and husband James of Vevay,
Thelma Seel of Lexington, one son, William B. Jewell and wife Mary L. of Vevay,
six grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren
and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by one sister, Mable
Copeland and two brothers, Wilmer and Manley Woodfill.
Mrs. Jewell graduated from the former St. Mary's Business College in Madison.
She worked at the Jefferson Proving Grounds and later retired from the U.S. Shoe
Corp. in Madison. She was a member of the Olive Branch Church in Switzerland
County.
Visitation will be held today, Tuesday, May 4, 11 a.m. until time of services
at Vail-Holt Funeral Home in Madison.
Funeral services will follow visitation at the funeral home at 2 p.m. with Herschel
Wyrick officiating.

Deloris Summers
Deloris Summers, 96, of the Hopewell community passed away Friday, April 30,
2004 at the Manderley Health Care Center in Osgood. She was born in the Hopewell
community near Holton on February 10, 1908 the daughter of Clarence and Bessie
Grossman Toops. She was married to Daay Summers on February 13, 1926 and he
preceded her in death in 1967.
Mrs. Summers was a homemaker and had been a member of the Hopewell Baptist Church
since 1924.
Survivors include her daughter-in-law, Shirley Summers of Osgood, six grandchildren,
Denver Summers, Jr. and his wife Mary of Osgood, Terry Summers of Holton, Chris
Summers and Jennifer of Florence, KY, Sharon Summers of Osgood, Scott Summers
of Osgood and Stacy Stater and Brian of Noblesville, one brother, Donald Toops
and his wife Molly of Osgood, and one sister-in-law, Barbara Toops of Edinburgh,
thirteen great-grandchildren and one great-great grandson. She was also preceded
in death by her parents, her son Denver Lee Summers and her brother Dallas Toops.
Funeral services will be held at the Hopewell Baptist Church at 11 a.m. with
Rev. David Shivers officiating.
Burial will be in the church cemetery. Memorials may be given to the Hopewell
Baptist Church Building Fund in care of the funeral home.
The Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home, Versailles, is in charge of the arrangements.
Doris B. LeBlanc
Doris B. LeBlanc, 90, of Batesville, died Friday, April 30, 2004 at her daughter's
residence in Franklin. She was born August 27, 1913 in Wapakoneta, OH the daughter
of Rudolf and Agnes (Duvall) Bachman, both deceased. She married Phillip E.
LeBlanc on May 8, 1937 in Wapakoneta, OH and he preceded her in death on October
18, 1993.
Survivors include one daughter, Andrea A. Deppe of Franklin, three sons, Philip
N. LeBlanc of Longwood, FL, Paul W. LeBlanc of Montrose, CO, Dennis G. LeBlanc
of Batesville, two sisters, Elizabeth Bachman of Wapakoneta, OH, Mary Wadsack
of Lake Charles, LA, two brothers, William Bachman of New Carlisle, OH, Matthias
Bachman of Midland, TX, eleven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She
was preceded in death by two twin daughters as infants and two brothers, James
and John Bachman.
Mrs. LeBlanc retired from Margaret Mary Community Hospital in Batesville in 1978.
She was a 1930 graduate of Blume High School in Wapakoneta, OH and also Deaconess
Hospital School of Nursing. She was a member of St. Mary of the Rock Catholic
Church and the Deaconess Alumni Association.
Visitation will be held today, Tuesday, May 4, 6-8 p.m. at Meyers Funeral Home
in Batesville.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, May 5, 10 a.m. at the funeral home.
Burial will be in the St. Louis Church Cemetery.
Memorials may go to the St. Louis Endowment Fund or the American Heart Association.
Homer "Bill" Combs
Homer "Bill" Combs, 79, of Madison, near Moorefield, formerly of Commiskey,
died Saturday, May 1, 2004 at Columbus Health & Rehab. He was born April
21, 1925 in Combs, KY the son of Dennis Combs and Nettie (Combs) Combs, both
deceased. He married Anna Mable (Marsh) Furnish on February 19, 1961 and she
survives.
Other survivors include three brothers, Ed Combs of Middletown, OH, Glen Combs
of Dayton, OH, Jack Morgan of Houston, TX, three sisters, Erie Napier of Hazard,
KY, Mary Jean Burton and Joyce Trefil, both of Grand Ledge, MI and several nieces,
nephews and other relatives. He was preceded in death by one sister, Ann Sinor
and one brother, Vernon Combs.
Mr. Combs resided in Humble, Texas for 17 years owning and operating the River
Inn Motel & Restaurant. He was inducted into the U.S. Marine Corps on June
26, 1942 in Louisville, KY serving the First Marine Division rising to the rank
of Staff Sergeant. He served in Noumea, New Caledonia, Efate, New Hebrides, Guadalcanal
and San Francisco. He was honorably discharged on November 21, 1945 from Parris
Island, South Carolina after completing his duty during World War II. He had
also worked as a chef and manager of the Greensburg Country Club and was the
past manager of the Jeffersonville Elks Club. He was a member of the North Vernon
Matt Hester Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2021 and the United Methodist Church
in Combs, KY.
Visitation will be held today, Tuesday, May 4, 11 a.m. (slow time) until time
of services at the Haskell & Morrison Funeral Home in Vevay.
Funeral services will follow visitation at the funeral home at 1 p.m. with Rev.
Tom Rogers officiating.
Burial will be in the Vevay Cemetery with full military honors conducted by the
Vevay American Legion and VFW. Memorials may go to the donor's favorite charity.
Orville Martin
Orville Martin, 83, of Versailles passed away Sunday, May 2, 2004 at his residence.
He was born at Warsaw, KY, on May 7, 1920 the son of J.C. and Ella Mae Hussong
Martin. He was married to JoAnn Kohler on January 11, 1963 and she survives.
Other survivors include three sons, David Martin and his wife Suzanne of Versailles,
Gary Martin and Kathy of Milton, KY, and Robert and Nancy Martin of Madison,
one daughter, Carolyn Jeanie Stroobrandt of Union, MI, two step
sons, Ricky Simone of North Vernon and Mike Simone of TX, one stepdaughter, Sharon
Winfield of TX, 12 grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Woodrow Martin, one sister,
Pearl Thomas, stepson, Russell Simone and grandson Christopher Martin.
Mr. Martin was formerly employed with Halcomb Home Center in Versailles and had
served as dog warden for Ripley County since 1982. He also was a former employee
of the Switzerland County Highway Department and had farmed in Ripley and Switzerland
counties. He was an army veteran of WWII and had received the Victory Medal,
Asiatic Pacific Theatre Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal, and the Army of Occupational
Japan Medal. He was a member of the Shelby Christian Church.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, May 5 at 11 a.m. at the Stratton-Karsteter
Funeral Home, Versailles with Bro. Earl Thomas officiating. Burial will be in
the Grandview Memorial Gardens near Madison. Visitation will be Tuesday, May
4 from 4-8 p.m. at the funeral home.
Military graveside rites will be given by the Versailles American Legion.
Memorials may be given to the Hospice of King's Daughters' Hospital in care of
the funeral home.
Wilbur "Bud" Scudder
Wilbur "Bud" Scudder, 79, of Versailles passed away Wednesday, April
28, 2004 at the King's Daughters' Hospital, Madison. He was born near Mt. Sterling
in Switzerland County on August 20, 1924, the son of Neely and Arizona Colon
Scudder. He was married to Marcella Dresselhaus and she survives.
Other survivors include one son, Steve Scudder and his wife Julie of Greenwood,
two grandchildren, Maura and Kevin Scudder, one brother Neely Scudder, Jr. of
Lawrenceburg, two sisters, Delores Tague of Vevay and Lorraine Weber of Dumfries,
VA. He was preceded in death by his parents, five sisters, Muriel Sigmon, Leo
Dunning, Helen Wise, Frances Scudder, and Maxine Weaver.
Mr. Scudder as an army veteran of WWII and had served as an anti-tank gunner
in the 4th division. He landed on Utah Beach on D-Day where he was wounded and
was captured by the Germans and spent six months in a German prisoner of war
camp. Mr. Scudder received the Purple Heart, Bronze Star, three Oak Leaf Clusters
and the P.O.W. Medal. He was a member of the Bear Creek Baptist Church at Friendship
and also the Vevay VFW. He and his wife owned the Siekerman General Store in
Friendship and from 1951 to 1971 he was employed with the Jefferson Proving Ground.
Funeral services were held Saturday, May 1 at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral
Home, Versailles with Rev. Sherman Hughes and Rev. John Brooks officiating. Burial
was in the St. Peter's Cemetery in Olean with full military graveside rites conducted
by the Versailles American Legion.
Memorials may be given to the cemetery in care of the funeral home.
