A Jewish Community in North Vernon
In North Vernon there was a Jewish Community which included the LYONS, GUMBLE, ADES and BERTMAN families.
Some of these people were early business owners. No mention of a Synagogue or any Jewish holiday
observances have been found.
1907 April 4 Plain Dealer – Mrs. NANNIE LYONS died at the home of her brother, WOLF GUMBLE,
Last Friday night at 11 o’clock. She had been in poor health for some time. She had made her home here for the past ten months
and had made many friends. She was born in Germany and was 73 years old. The remains were taken to Cincinnati Sunday morning
and interred in the Jewish Cemetery, Walnut Hills. Among the many relatives who accompanied the remains were
WOLF GUMBLE, Mr. and Mrs. MOSES GUMBLE, MEYER ADES and wife, and JACOB BERTMAN.
1907 March 7 Plain Dealer – Sunday evening at 5 o’clock Miss LENA GUMBLE and Mr. MEYER ADES were united in marriage at the home
of the bride’s father, WOLF GUMBLE, on O. & M. Ave. Rabbi S. F. SALINGER of Louisville performing the ceremony. The guests were
then taken to the Commercial Hotel where an elegant dinner was served. The bride is the daughter of WOLF GUMBLE and has for many years assisted
in conducting WOLF GUMBLE & Son’s Store. Mr. ADES is a progressive young man come from Bedford where he has been connected
with his father in the Clothing business. They will make this city their future home. Those present were: SAMUEL ARKEY and wife of St. Louis,
MOSE W. ADES and wife of Louisville, NANNIE ADES, MINNIE BARNCH, of St. Louis, RACHEL GUMBLE, of New York.
JACOB ADES and wife, of Cincinnati, EMANUEL LOTH and wife, of Cincinnati, ALFRED HARMAN, Columbus, O., WILL GUMBLE, Columbus, O,
HINDA GOODMAN, of Louisville, Ky., I. B. ADES and wife, of Bedford, LOUIS GAOSSMAN and wife, of Louisville, MACK ISAAC and wife,
of Louisville, PHILLIP FRAILING and wife of Louisville, Miss HANNA and ROSA BLOCK of Cincinnati, LOUIS FRANK and wife, of Cincinnati,
ABE and MOSES ADES, Bedford, RUTH and MARION FRANK, of Cincinnati, and RALPH ROSENTHAL, of Louisville, Ky.
Misses EDNA KAY, CLARA SEINER, BIRDIE SEINER, MARGARET DIXON, JACOB BERTMAN and wife, and ROBERT MCCARNAN,
of this city.
1915 March 7 Sun – CINCINNATI WOMAN HIT BY TRAIN – September 9 – Mrs. HANNAH HECHT, age 70 widow of NOAH HECHT, former well known
Cincinnati chinaware merchant, died Friday night as the result of being hit by a train at the Walnut Street crossing in this city.
She sustained a broken leg, bruises about the face and internal injuries. Following the accident she was taken to the city hospital and
later to the home of her son-in-law, MOSE GUMBLE, there she died a short time after Mrs. HECHT has been making her home
here for several months with Mr. and Mrs. GUMBLE ansd was on her way down town when the fatal accident occurred. The aged lady was
partially deaf which accounts for her not hearing the approaching train. Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. LOUIS FRANK, Cincinnati;
MRS. JAMES REUBEN, Virginia; Mrs. MOSE GUMBLE, this city; a son SAMUEL HECHT, of Denver Colo.The funeral was held Monday
afternoon from the residence of a daughter, Mrs. LOUIS FRANK, conducted by Rev. Dr. PHILLINSON, of the Avondale Temple.
Interment was made in the cemetery at Price Hill.
