My mother came to Amer in 1838 from Ireland landing in Jen Co. in Oct 31-1838 and with her father, mother and family settled in what was known as the DILLON farm about 3 mi east of North Vernon in the Mustacatuch River the City of No. Vernon then was a farm the earliest she remembered was a grist mill to grind corn on the Muscatuch River north of the old wagon bridge east of town it was run by a man named Andrews who lived in the house on west side of the river the old foundation in the creek was there until recent years. His farm was then what is known as Irish Hill. As there was no bridge they forded the creek horseback with corn to grind to make corn bread. The only road going west was known as the Greensburg Road that came from the north where _______ pipe is now. There was no Quarry there then it went through the golf links as now and came to the state road at the Waltermire Place and through the State Park and meet with the then known Irish Road named that for so many Irish hiring down that road. It went west to St. Catherines Church near the STEWART farm, where her folks were buried 100 yr. ago. The church was abandoned about 78 years ago and rebuilt at Four Corners. The only voting place there was at Court House in Vernon. Father said they all went to Vernon to vote for JIM BUCANAN for Pres. and there was a barrel of whiskey in the corner of the court house with tin cup hanging in for the people to drink.

The village where N. Vernon is now was started after the B. & O. R.R. came 1852 (see note at bottom) and was called Lick Skillet and in 1853 Hagerman Tripp afwards a Cornel in Civil War laid out the town of Tripton and the original plots from farms were Tripton Add, Remely Addinan by a man named Remley whose house was where the Moose Grounds are now afterward Hick-McGannon Add./ ANDREWS, TODD, WRAPE, STOWLIL, and MORGAN the latter built the first 3 storey Bld where GREATHOUSE is now in the town its 3 story was a Public Hall. At the corner of Buckeye street there was a 2 story lg. house the lower floor was a blacksmith shop he live up stairs DAN MARCH. The road went through the golf links.

Note : The first railroad which went through North Vernon in 1852 was the Jefferson, Indianapolis and Madison Railroad. Later it became the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad.
