genealogy research in southeastern Indiana

Because of the many changes in the formation of Indiana, information on inhabitants of the area now known as Jennings County before December 17, 1816 might actually be found in connection to other counties and located in other counties.

For an explanation of where you might have to look for records before 1816 go to Finding Early Records of Jennings County.

For in depth information on the formation of Jennings County and the Grouseland Treaty Line go to Jennings County, Indiana Formation.

For records that relate to persons associated with the Jennings County area prior to 1817 you might have to go to research locations in the surrounding counties of Jackson (to the West), Bartholomew (to the North), Decatur and Ripley (to the East), Jefferson and Scott (to the South), Floyd and Clark (farther south), and Knox (in western Indiana). See the Research Locations List for exact addresses and phone numbers. For information on researching in these counties, please contact the county in question

For genealogical societies in Indiana you can find many at the Indiana Historical Society's List Genealogical Societies in Indiana.
